"Shorty" Higgs were conducted Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the Eastside Baptist Church. Officiating were Rev. R.T. Brundige and Rev. Tim Emmons. Mr. Higgs was born October 27, 1904, at Conway, Arkansas, the son of Luther and Blanche Shelton Higgs, and died February 16, 1995, at his home in Wichita Falls, Texas, at the age of 90. He moved to Love County as a child and had made his home in Wichita Falls for the past two years. Mr. Higgs was a charter member of Eastside Baptist Church where he served as the first Sunday School Superintendent, Church Treasurer and Deacon. He also helped compile the first church bulletin. Mr. Higgs married Ruth E. Richmond on May 13, 1985, in Marietta, and she preceded him in death on February 15, 1995. He was also preceded in death by his first wife of 53 years, Ruby E. Fincher Higgs on July 18, 1984. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sonya and Dub Largen and Sylvia and Bob Rounsaville of Wichita Falls; a brother, Ted Higgs; four sisters, Beth Parker, June Sampson, Mary Lee Northcutt and Yvonne Jordan; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services were under the direction of the Anderson-Kennedy Funeral Home with interment in the Burneyville Cemetery. Deacons of Eastside Baptist Church were pallbearers, and honorary bearers were Doug Simon, Sr., Jess Bond, Ralph Evans and Sid Bone. Source: Marietta Monitor, Love County, February 24, 1995, page 4.
