    1. [OKLove] Former County resident releases first book
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Baxley Classification: Deed Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xYB.2ACE/1432 Message Board Post: A former Love County resident has announced the recent release of her new book, "The Homebody," and has organized a book signing in Marietta. Martha Baxley grew up in Love County and graduated from Courtney High School. She was married at the Love County Courthouse and now resides in Texas. "The Homebody" is a story of country and small-town people in modern day Oklahoma. Baxley said, "When you drive along the highway and zip past a neat home in the country, you are apt to wonder what those people do for entertainment. Truth is, those people are so busy living their lives, they would be bored anyplace else." The author has taken the caring attitude and the intimacy of a small town and woven it into a fast-moving tale. When she lost her husband and childhood sweetheart, Baxley joined Toastmasters, a public speaking organization, to get out of the house. While a member of Toastmasters, she wrote her own speeches - mostly about the lighter side of things such as times she fell down in public, her worst blind date when he showed up in a hearse, the day her teenage boyfriend attempted to teach her to drive, and a camping trip where everything went really bad. After a while, she realized the compilation of her speeches was basically her own biography. She later tried her hand at fiction and has decided she really enjoys it and the freedom it gives her to develop her own characters. Baxley will be available at a signing party Saturday, July 19, from 10 a.m. to noon at Nichols Dollar Saver in Marietta. Source: Marietta Monitor, Love County, July 11, 2003, page 5.

    1. [OKLove] Sam Porter in line of fire providing disaster assistance
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Porter, Hamilton, Peters Classification: Deed Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xYB.2ACE/1423 Message Board Post: Marietta native Sam Porter is no stranger to disaster, but recently he experienced - for the first time - being shot at while attempting to help those in need. Porter is the Disaster Relief Coordinator for the Oklahoma Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Team. He recently returned after having spent nearly two weeks leading a water purification team in Iraq. He anticipates returning to Iraq soon to lead distribution of the Iraqi food boxes collected in Oklahoma. "It's true. As we were flying to one of the water purification sites, our military helicopter was shot at. It's a little unnerving, but we knew the people shooting at us didn't realize we were there to help them, " Porter said. "I was very impressed with the calm demeanor and resolve of our military personnel. The Marines we were with were only able to return fire if the helicopter was hit. They live daily in harm's way." "Armed guards escorted us wherever we went. How soon we return to Iraq depends on security issues," he added. Porter will spend Tuesday afternoon with his fellow relief workers at the Edmond food box collection site coordinating the final stages of the food drive. There have been more than two semitrailers of food collected at two collection sites, totaling more than 75,000 pounds. Porter's return to Iraq has not yet been pinpointed, but he continues to make preparations for his return to assist those in need. Source: Marietta Monitor, Love County, June 6, 2003, page 3 Sam Porter is a 1970 graduate of Marietta High School and the son of Roy and Lois Porter of Marietta and Claudia Hamilton. His wife is Sheryl Peters, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Gerald Peters, former pastor of the First Baptist Church of Marietta.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Chambers Classification: Lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xYB.2ACE/1421 Message Board Post: Uncle John's middle name was Sterling, meaning reliable and genuine. He was aptly named. He was an original and he never changed. He had the knack for making everyone around him feel special. He was nonjudgmental, loved everyone and was not afraid to express this love. Born at the turn of the century, at Oswalt, I.T. and still savoring life at the beginning of the new millennium, he lived his 101 years plus nearly eleven months to the fullest. If a man's wealth was judged by the amount of friends he had, his love of family or the love his family had for him, he would have been a billionaire - not that money was important to him. Everyone who knew him was aware of his quick wit and sharp mind, as well as his remarkable sense of humor. He was a natural storyteller. His imagery was so vivid that one could see what he was telling and most of his humerous stories took on a cartoon form in one's mind. A visit with Uncle John always meant a story retold or a new one, never heard before. There was also John, the philosopher. His philosophy on life and his theological views were unique. He believed that man was put on earth to enjoy life. He said God gave man life and everything needed to enjoy it. He felt that one had to work at being happy and to make the most of what was given. He said he never asked God for anything that he could get for himself. He only asked for God's help in doing what he needed to do, to provide for his family. He said he was happy if his family was well, had enough to eat and had a roof over their heads. He felt that those who worry about acquiring money were doomed to a life of misery. His greatest belief and secret to a long, happy life was his thoughts on honesty and integrity. He said a man's word was his bond. He believed that if a man kept his word and did what he said he would do, he was rich. He often said that a man could have a stack of money as high as his head, but if his word was no good, he had nothing. John and his wife, Bertha, worked hard all their lives at all kinds of labor. They loved to dance and he continued to enjoy music and dancing. He danced every dance at his 100th birthday party - in his wheelchair. In the last days of his life, he danced in his hospital bed, moving his feet and shoulders to the music. He found joy in everything and in everyone. He saw much of history. As a ten-year-old, he saw the Confederate Home/Veteran's Center at Ardmore being built. He spent the last years of his life in that facility. At age 16, he drove the mail buggy, delivering mail from Overbrook to Oswalt. He was the first person to drive around Pittman Hill on the newly-opened Oswalt Road. He saw the world change dramatically but seemed to take change in stride and embraced new inventions and ideas while cherishing the memories of the past and remembering the sacrifices of those of the generation before him. Uncle John was thankful for every gift given him. Again, he was appropriately named, as John means "gracious gift of God." He truly was God's gift to all who were fortunate enough to have known him and be loved by him. Laquitta Ladner Source: Marietta Monitor, Love County, June 6, 2003, page 4
