As I recall, it was the KATY. A new line was laid through Lincoln County in the early 1900s. My father recalled working as a water boy. The railroad came through what was then Parnell, south of Chandler. My grandfather founded the town. Since there was already a Parnell on the KATY in Kansas, the Town of Parnell was changed to Payson. It was named after Payson Ripley, the nephew of the President of the Katy, so the story goes. Hopes this helps. W. C. Parnell, III
