Gary, I was born and raised in Wister. The lake/dam is 5 miles out of Wister, the church is behind the Mt. View Church which is across the spillway of the dam. It is a beautiful cemetery and very well kept. I grew up thinking it was always called the Glendale Cemetery, and at that time, there was a school and post office there, but now only the Church and Cemetery remains. Think William Smith gave you a pretty good description as to the whereabouts of it. One description of the location is: From Wister, OK. take Hwy. 270 East through downtown Wister and follow signs to Lake Wister. Cross the dam and turn right on the first paved road. After winding up a hill, the church and cemetery is on the right. (confused yet??) I think I would list that your kin is buried Mountain View Cemetery, Glendale, IT, now LeFlore County, Oklahoma. But of course that is my opinion. Gary Wilson wrote: > > Hi, > Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Gary Wilson. After it became a stae then this would be right. In 1894 was there such a place as Le Flore county and also it was not Oklahoma yet. What would be the proper way to write this down? This area was known as Indian territory right? > The information I also have is that this cemetery is behind a church next to a dam? and the town of Glendale no longer exists ? > I do have a picture of her headstone, I just want to get the right location for it. > Thank you ! > Gary Wilson > > ==== OKLEFLOR Mailing List ==== > OKGenWeb Lawmen and Outlaws > http://marti.rootsweb.com/law/law.htm > Indian Pioneer Papers > http://www.rootsweb.com/~okgenweb/pioneer/pioneer.htm
Gary, The directions Billie gave are correct. My father's family grew up there, I ran around those hills after I was grown, I go back often, some of my family lives there and many are buried there. As Billie said, most people from that area call the church and cemetery "Glendale" because it is in the Glendale Community, but as far as the history states it has always been named Mt. View Baptist Church and Cemetery. As stated before, there was a church, cemetery, school, and then there was a small store further down the road, but I don't think there was ever a town known as Glendale. Most people out there were related somehow or another, or their in-laws were related to them. Everyone called the adults "Aunt" or "Uncle". It has always been a part of Howe Oklahoma since statehood, I think, but it isn't far from Heavener or Wister. I do know that the land descriptions are a part of the Howe descriptions. The lake wasn't always there but people from Wister had to cross the Poteau River on a ferry in order to get there. At one time that ferry was owned?/operated by John Balentine, my great grandfather. In answer to your question: I think I would merely put it as Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory ... and then in parenthesis or in the notes perhaps you could expand by stating that the area is now known as Glendale Community, Howe, Leflore County, Oklahoma. Hopefully this will help you. Becky billie adams wrote: > > Gary, I was born and raised in Wister. The > lake/dam is 5 miles out of Wister, the church is > behind the Mt.
