My Virgil Wood moved to Kay Co, OK from Hempstead Co, AR sometime after the 1880 census. He and his wife are buried in the IOOF Cemetery in Blackwell, so I'm sure they never left Kay County once they had moved there. I would dearly LOVE to have information from census records on their family, especially the 1900 census, since it may include names of children of which I'm unaware. If anyone on this list has access to the census records and could help me with this, I'd be most appreciative. I live in Mobile, AL, and we have no records at all for Oklahoma. Earlene Lyle

My wife, Laura Reed Rogers Coleman, was born and raised in Blackwell, OK in Kay County. One of her ancestral families is the Savage family in Cowley County, KS. Other slightly distant Savage cousins of hers also settled in Blackwell, OK. In fact, Laura's sister, Carolyn Rogers married Mark Savage. Searching and willing to share concerning Johnson C. LINDSEY & wife Mary Ann MATTHEWS LINDSEY who moved to Ponca City, Kay Co., OK with their children (some of whom were adults at this time): Frances, Robert, Charles, Joseph, Paul, Katie, & Laura. I am researching the Shidler family. Carroll Shidler and wife Elizabeth Anderson married in Jasper Co, IN in 1867 and move to Butler Co, KS for awhile and then to Kay Co, OK about 1900. Greetings from CA. My first post. Does anyone have the 1900 census and would look up BISSELL, Luther in Weston Twp or Blackwell, please and thanks. I was in the county for the first time, 5 weeks ago and was thrilled to see the original home on rte 11 still standing; the Prairie Chapel, too, which they helped to build. The Kildare School which my dad attended was gone, I believe. The feed and seed store that the family operated in town may not be there yet but their laundry bldg is. I was truly amazed to ride on an old brick street in town, College St. I recall. The family lived at 501 E. College, I believe. Have a nice day. Robert Bissell

Hi, Robert. I just got my copy of "North Central Oklahoma: Rooted in the Past" out of storage (stored by accident, obviously), and found some info on the above. There is a picture of "The Kildare School" taken in 1910 (no other info) which was contributed by the Newkirk Museum. No other schools are listed specifically for Kildare. You might want to check with the museum to see if they have anything further. The Business College has had several names. It was originally named (1902) University Preparatory School, which was changed by the legislature to the University Preparatory School and Oklahoma State Business Acadamy after WWI. In 1921, two years of standard college work was added and it became the University Preparatory and Junior Vocational College. In 1941, it was renamed Northern Oklahoma Junior College. I believe it is located in Tonkawa (sorry, I'm not a resident). It was founded there and nothing in the article indicates that it moved.
