    3. Hi, I'm Pat McAlpine and I'm new to your list and would like to post my ancestor. My grandmother was a Gracie Lorene Shaw b. ca 1890 in MO and believe she might have lived a short time in KS enroute to Indian Territory. I have no idea who her parents were because she died in 1922 when my Mom was only 5 or 6 years old. She was married 1st to a Wm. or Bill Chatham and 2nd to my grandpa, James Arthur Landrum. I have traced a Charles & Clinton Shaw from MO to that area and they both had daughters named Grace but I can't prove a connection yet. My grandpa also lived in Washington Co so think there might be a connection to Kay Co. If anyone knows anything to help me, I would be so grateful. My Mom is 83 years old and still doesn't know who her grandparents were. Thanks so much for your help. Pat McAlpine

    1. [OKKAY] Need Kay County marriage information.
    2. Happy New Year, 2000, Kay County List members; Only last week, I posted a request for help in finding the children of Dr. Virgil and Sarah Wood, who left Hempstead County, Arkansas and just disappeared. Although I heard very quickly after the posting from two list memebers, I still need some marriage information on five of the Wood children I listed in the first posting; they are: Beulah L. Wood, born in Hempstead Co., AR circa 1877. Edna E. Wood, born after 1880 Robert H. Wood (born after Edna) Okla Wood, twin to Homa. (Twins, Okla & Homa, youngest of known children) Homa Wood, twin to Okla. A very gracious Oklahoma lady, named, Darlene, has already found the marriage record of one of the children listed last week. I left her out out of this posting, since I received the following from her; "Minnie O. Wood, (23), and her husband, a Mr. D. A. Rose, (25), married in Kay County. Both husband and wife had been living in Watonga, Blaine County, O. T. according to the record. They were married in Blackwell, Oct. 22, 1902. by George L. Hale, pastor. (Entry # 117, page 20)." Darlene, checked the Kay County Marriage Records for 1893-1900 and Volume 4 1902-1904. Besides Minnie Wood, she found listings for Fred, Guy C., Harry R., Mary E., Ulyses, V.A., and William E. Wood in the index. She checked these later to see if a parent was listed in either of the latter names, giving consent to an under-age party; she found none listed. I was hoping she would find a Virgil or Sarah Wood giving consent of an under-aged V. A. Wood in the listing above....no such luck. Since Dr Wood's initials are V. A., I was hoping this was another child born after they moved to Oklahoma, on whom I had no record. Darlene wrote me, "I do not have records from 1900-1902". If any one in the Kay County area has access to marriage records for years, 1900-1902, and any marriage records after 1904, I would be very grateful if either of these Wood children could be found. Darlene, has already done a lot of hard work by checking for these children in the Kay County Marriage Records for years, 1893-1900 and Volume 4 of, 1902-1904. So, there will be no need to look in those records again. She has really gotten me off on a happy start into this new millenium by finding one of the Wood children in just a few hours after my posting to this list last week. I will forever be grateful to her for finding marriage records of, Minnie O. Wood, the second child, who was born, Jan 1880 in Arkansas. All children but Beulah, were born after 1880. A Mr. Shupe, who lived in Blackwell at one time, helped give me a badly needed education in the history and geography of Oklahoma, as did Darlene, an Oklahoma lady already mentioned. Mr. Shupe is going to try get back to Kay County later this month to look for the obits of Virgil, and possibly, Sarah's in the old newspaper records. He has already answered my query of last week concerning the earliest available census records of the Kay County area. I am in the process of trying yo acquire those Kay County census years so I can go through them. We have little to no Oklahoma records in my rural town area. About 5-6 weeks ago, after inquiring by mail to the UAMS Library in Little Rock, AR., the librarian sent me Xeroxed copies of four sheets from the April 18, 1925, edition of the Journal of American Medical Society (JAMA). One of those four sheets included an account of medical journal type of an obituary of, Dr. Virgil A. Wood. It lists the date of his death, March, 19, 1925, in Blackwell, OK. Indeed, his double-headstone was located in the I.O.O.F Cemetery, Kay County by, Ms. Judith Tickel Need. She found it in her cemetery records in just an hour or so after I emailed her. She was listed as a volunteer for cemetery record lookups at the Kay County website. Virgil's wife, Sarah, died Sep 21, 1932, and is buried beside him. Any information on the other five Wood children listed would be appreciated, very much. Thank you in advance, Ray Turner in Hempstead County, Arkansas.

    1. [OKKAY] WOOD surname marriage dates needed/Years of earliest Kay census records needed.
    2. Hello, List members, If any members on the list are in the Newkirk area and have access to any books on the marriage records of Kay County, I would forever be grateful for a marriage date on any of the children of, Dr. Virgil A. WOOD and wife, Sarah "Sallie" C. WOOD. Other Wood children could have been born in Kay County OK after 1880. Those I have any record of are listed below: Beulah L. Wood was born in Hempstead Co., AR circa 1877. Minnie O. Wood was born in Hempstead Co., AR in January 1880. Edna E. Wood Robert H. Wood Okla Wood, twin to Homa. Homa Wood, twin to Okla. The Wood Family were in the 1880 census of Hempstead County Arkansas. Only Beulah and Minnie were in that census, the others were born afterward and were listed in the Arkansas textbook, "Goodspeed Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Southern Arkansas" . No other records had been found on Dr. WOOD and his family until very recently when I received records of Dr. Virgil A. Wood practicing medicine in 1885, Blackwell, OK. See below: In the listed DEATHS from the Journal of the American Medical Association, JAMA 84:129, Apr 18, 1925; "Virgil A. Wood, Blackwell, Okla; Kentucky School of Medicine, Lewisville, 1885; member of the Oklahoma State Medical Association, aged 75; died, March 19, of pneumonia." _______ Ms. Judith Need, volunteer for lookups in Kay county Cemetery records, was gracious enough to provide me with the following cemetery record: Buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery at Blackwell, OK Dr. V.A. Wood; August 12, 1849 - March 19, 1925; wife Sarah C.; Mason Sarah C. Wood; November 3, 1855 - September 21, 1932 ______ She was also kind enough to list all other Wood names in all of the Kay County Cemetery records. I will remain forever grateful to her for all of the information she sent me. I am hoping somebody has access to marriage records of Kay County. The two older girls would have been around 20 and 23 years old in 1900 according to their ages at their last birthday in 1880. The other children would have been younger and married after 1900. The BRIDE index in marriage book records should show the girls. I have not been able to find any records of the earliest Kay County census records which would show the names in the Virgil and Sarah "Sallie" Wood household. Several children should be in the household in 1900, 1910, possibly 1920. I have no idea when the first Kay County census was taken. ANY information on ANY of the members of this family would be appreciated very much. I will be glad to reimburse for any expenses incurred. Thanks in advance, Ray Turner, in Hempstead County, Arkansas.

    1. [OKKAY] McGuire/MaGuire/Brown/Thompson
    2. Hi, I am new to the list but just got a lead that my family was in the area in 1900. The soundex which is barely readable says they were on the Kaw Indian Reservation. I cant seem to find them on the census, although the soundex read Kaw Indian Reservation. My copy of the census is not very clear so I may be over looking them. So if anyone has seen this family on the census I would appreciate the help. I have searched for this guy for years only to find him and not be able to read the information. My grandfather appears on the soundex as Henry Maguire. The actual spelling should be MCGUIRE. His wife was Susan Catherine THOMPSON. They had three children we know of Drewzilla, Liza, Ottie (list as John on the census). Liza doesn't appear on the 1900 soundex with her family. She is the oldest child according to my records and may have been married already although she would have not been older than 14 or 15. Liza was supposedly married to a Ike BROWN first and later a GRAY. Her sister Drewzilla who birth name is Rebecca Drewzilla also was supposed to be married the 1st time to a BROWN. We believe his name was Frank. Drewzilla later married a John SKINNER. Does any of this sound at all familiar to anyone on this list? Or can anyone offer me any suggestions. I have checked Kay Co., Cemetery records for Susan and Henry but came up with nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Gina McGuire
