    1. [OKJOHNST] Henegars in Tishamingo, Ok
    2. Mark Taylor
    3. I am looking for any information on the Henegar family. I am trying to find my great grandmother. She was an Indian woman and went by the name Columbia Ann Henegar. John Abraham Fox "married" her in 1883/1884 in Tishomingo or Stonewall (then Chickasaw Nation, IT). She was 13 years old. John worked at Byrd and Perry's store in the late 1880s. I believe he bounced back and forth between the stores in Tishomingo and Stonewall. Columbia was a full blood Cherokee and was forced to give up her Indian name. No one in my family was ever told her real name. She chose a name from the customers who came into the store. The surname is the same as the merchant-grocer of that store on the 1900 Chickasaw Nation, IT Census. I believe that she chose that as her surname possibly for the whole family. Evidence indicates that they could not be blood related. I have found that she had at least two brothers, Jay and Wash (maybe Vash couldn't read the census takers handwriting very well) Henegar who were living with John and Columbia during the 1900 census. On her death certificate, her father's name was listed as Will Henegar. Her mother was simply listed at Paralee. I am searching for any information about Byrd and Perry's store, the Henegar's who ran the store, any one who would know my Great Grandparents, any pictures that anyone may have. Anything that may lead me to the true identity of Columbia Ann. I realize this is a big request, but if anyone out there knows the history of Tishomingo or Stonewall, you may recall stories.... William Henegar and his wife, Ella (from the Byrd and Perry's store) had at least three daughters. Elsie was born in 1908 and died in 1910. She is buried in Condon Grove Cemetary. Is that around this area? It may lead me in the direction of the Henegar's related to Will. They may have some answers for me. Also, found Ella Henegar lived to be 99 years old. Her last known location was in Malvern, Hot Springs, AR back in 1970. Columbia Ann was born March 1870 either in Fort Smith, AR (though I have found no census records in Ft. Smith at that time) or around Stonewall, OK which would have been Chickasaw Nation, IT. Census shows that her both of her parents were born in TN. Brothers that I know of were Jay b:3-1879 in AR or IT and Wash b: 6-1880 in IT. The Henegars (from whom I think she chose her name) were William b: Aug 1872 i OH parents from VA and England. His wife is Ella b: 12-1871 in AL parents born in Ireland and TN. in 1900, they had two daughters. Ruth b:7-1896 and Cleo b: 5-1900. Another child Elsie b:1908 d:1910. Apparently William's father, James Henegar and wife Elizabeth were there also with one daughter Pearl. They had three children total. If anyone has any information about Henegars in a 1910 census - not sure if it would be Chickasaw Nation or Johnston Cty at that time, maybe even Pontotoc Cty, I would love the info. Thank you for indulging me for so long. Blessings, Dona Taylor Thanks for listening, Dona Taylor -----Original Message----- From: OKJOHNST-L-request@rootsweb.com <OKJOHNST-L-request@rootsweb.com> To: taylorbunch@email.msn.com <taylorbunch@email.msn.com> Date: Tuesday, September 07, 1999 12:16 AM >You have added to the subscriber list of: > > OKJOHNST-L@rootsweb.com > >the following mail address: > > taylorbunch@email.msn.com > >By default, copies of your own submissions will be returned. > >Welcome to the OKJOHNST mailing list!
