Posted on: Johnston County, Ok Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Johnston/720 Surname: WIGINGTON ------------------------- I am looking for information on my father's first wife. Until I was an adult I had no idea that my father had been previously married. I know very little other than the fact that he was married to a woman named Ima Jean and that he had a son they called Donny. When I asked my mother where Donny was I was told that he had lived with his mother, but was killed when his gocart was hit by a car. My father, Paul Franklin Wigington, was born in 1927 in Troy, OK. His parents moved at some point after that to Thousand Oaks, CA. His father died in 1944 so his mother, Mary Caroline Wigington, returned to OK. Upon my father's return from WWII in January 1947 he too was back in OK. So between Jan 1947 and Jan 1951 when my father married my mother, he was married, had a son, and divorced. I would like to know what the name of the mother of Donny was and where Donny was buried. I know my father's family was in and around Troy and Tishomingo. I would appreciate any information. Thanks in advance. Paula

This little write up was passed along to me from Dorothy Potter and Jean Eddings. Written by Carrie Jester to Mac McGallard of the Daily Ardmoreite. I do not have a date for this article. Reporter's Notebook Mac McGallard History of Russett Over in Johnston County between- Mannsville and Ravia, beside the new highway to Tishomingo, you can see the little that remains of the pioneer days town of Russett. It is located in edge of the Washita River valley where the soil in deep and fertile-tile and farmers located very early. The Oklahoma Place Names book lists, "RUSSETT. In southwestern Johnston County, 6 miles east of Mannsville. A post office from October 3, 1894, to September 15, 1924." Carrie Jester, who moved to Russett In Indian Territory days and now lives at Madill, sent along the following remembrances of the now-vanished town. It reads: I was born in Cook County Texas August 8, 1893 and my parents Tom and Martha Waggoner moved to Russett, I.T., when I was four months old. At that time Russett was a nice little town that people might refer to as a wide place in the road. I grew up there and spent most of my life there. I got all my education there. We did not have good schools -- they were subscription schools. The parents would pay one dollar per month for each child that attended the school. Many people with large families were unable to pay the dollar and the teacher would teach a short time and quit, because they had no pay. My earliest recollection of Russett was they had a big cotton gin, a big lumber mill and a grist mill. The owner's name was Payton. They had two large stores that sold everything from horse collars to ladies taffeta petticoats. The owner of one of the stores was Lonnie Cornstock, the other was Sam Hays and Will Craig. They were half brothers. There was a drug store. The owner's name was Will Hamilton. The post office was there. The post master was Mr. Abernathy. There was a small cafe. The owner's name was Lee Shepard. There was also a large blacksmith shop. The owner was Joe Pitson. Mr. Pitson made coffins to bury the dead. He made those out of plain lumber and covered them with certain cloth material such as velvet or sateen. In that day they called them coffins which in our modern time are called caskets. We had one large building which was the school house when we had school. We also held church ser-vices there on Sunday. Then all the social activities were held there. They had a dentist Dr. Caperton. There were two doctors Dr. Trinkle and Dr. Lipscon. The little town was then north of the present old school house on what is now the Holland Jester ranch. In 1901 the Rock Island Railroad Co. built a line through Russett. It ran from Ardmore to Haileyville. There were four trains daily. They had a nice two story Depot and a water tank. In 1904 an Indian woman came there. Her name Kate O'Brien. She was called (Aunt Kate). She and two son's allotted several hundred acres of land there. Russett, our little town, was on her allotment and she wanted it moved. So she laid out a town site south of the old Highway 70 and where the present Baptist Church stands. Most people bought lots and moved. The business men moved their businesses and houses and continued to operate their business for many years. In 1905 we had the first school that lasted for 9 months. The teacher, Miss Julia Wilhite taught the one room school for three years. After statehood they built a two story frame school building. They employed three teachers but only taught thru the 8th grade. In the early twenties they voted bonds and built the brick school building. We had a high school then and some of the finest men and women anywhere graduated from the school. They are everywhere in all professions and business. In the 1918's and 1919's Fred A. Chapman Sr. came to Russett and bought thousands of acres of land. Mr. Chapman was a great asset to the community. He cleared away the excess timber and drained the lakes and ponds of stagnated water that caused so much malaria. People were infected with the malaria and in some cases it caused death. He had his heart in the school and worked diligently for the advancement of pupils and school as a whole. Mr. Chapman had a grocery store there for many years. Everything is gone except the Baptist Church, They still have services each Sunday. There is no social activity. There are many fine people out there and some new houses are being built. But when the old timers come by they say, "Well, where is Russett, I can't find anything like it used to be." No, it is gone with the wind. But who knows it might return some day and be another wide place in the road."
Hello, All: Hoping to find information on the Adkins family living in the Fillmore, Johnston County, area. My grandfather, Luther William Adkins, was born in Coryell County, TX but most of his family lived in Oklahoma in later years. His father was G.D. Adkins, born in the late 1850s in Arkansas we think. One brother, Charlie, was living in Lawton, OK in 1972 when my grandfather died. A recent response to a query I posted leads me to Adkins in the Fillmore area -- Charlie, Wesley, Billy, Johnny, Jack, Lincoln and Lucille. Possible other sisters but could also be spouses were Leona and Mary. Charlie, Wesley and Lucille match names of other family members so I'm hoping there's a connection. Any leads would be most appreciated. Thanks, Lucille Adkins reztolbd@aol.com

Here is more that I remember about Russett, OK. By the time we moved there in about 1974 the old school was nothing but rubble inside. The gymnasium was and is still standing and being used for storage. As a kid I used to go dig around in the bricks at the school and find old school books.... the books had just been piled up and rained on for years. It was as if they had melted. A few times I dug through the cocoon of paper and found some books still intact though I have since lost track of them. There were a few abandoned school buses around there, too that we used to play in. There was a house right next to the school...that house was completely gutted and very scary to walk in because the floor boards were rotten. Our favorite house to play in was the two story one with the storm shelter, near the church. That was the closest storm shelter for us too so every spring we would have to rush to that shelter in the night and fight our way through cobwebs and creepy stuff to the (often water filled) shelter. Once in high school a group of us girls spent the night in that house and told scary stories all night. It was fun. That house burned down sometime during the last 5 years. I have some pictures of it though. While we lived there, my father was the foreman for Bill Chapman who owned all of the land around Russett. His house was directly across the road from the school gym. His house had an old gas pump in front of it...I'm not sure if it originally stood there. Our house was across the main street from the school. I could see the school from my front porch. I loved that little town and always wondered about its history even back when I was a little kid. I would love to know more. As I dig out pictures etc.. I will start a web page just for little ole Russett. :) Let me know if you would like to contribute or if you have any old pictures from the area around Russett and Pettyjohn Springs Road. Posted on: Johnston County, Ok Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Johnston/711 Surname: Romine, Gore, Brown ------------------------- I don't have any info on the Romines. I wish I did. The only info I have is that Julia Frances Romine married James Isaac Gore at Earl, Johnston Co., OK. in 1896 or 97. My grandmother always said that her Brown family was related to the Romines in some way but she didn't know how. My g-g-grandparents Samuel Houston Brown and wife Vina Lina Reynolds Brown lived at Earl in the early 1890s.James Gore, who married Julia Romine, was my grandmother's uncle. My Sam Houston came from Tennessee, through Alabama, and Texas, before settling in Oklahoma. He is buried at Earl Cemetery. I just haven't had enough info to start looking. Janet
