Surnames: HUNTER, CHASTINE, ROBERTSON Classification: Death Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/nYB.2ACE/902 Message Board Post: >From the Calvin Enterprise Nov. 20, 1914 pg. 1 Burned To Death House and Contents Also Consumed One of the most appalling tragedies that ever happened in this community occurred Friday evening of last week about 6 o’clock when the home of Mrs. Mattie HUNTER was burned down. Mrs. HUNTER was preparing supper Friday evening when her mother, Mrs. CHASTINE(?) who was visiting her , picked up a bucket of gasoline, supposing it was water, and started to fill the teakettle. Mrs. HUNTER saw what her mother was about to do and ran to stop her when some of the gasoline slopped over on the hot stove, instantly the whole room was in fierce blaze, the gasoline covering Mrs. HUNTER from her head to her feet. She managed to get out of the house with her clothing in a blaze all over, when her brother, Starling CHASTINE, ran to her assistance and began tearing her cloths off of her, but she was so badly burned that after living amid much suffering, she died Sunday at noon. The house and contents were entirely consumed excepting a couple of trunks and the family wash was on the line drying. Mrs. HUNTER was taken across the street to home of O. G. ROBERTSON where she was tenderly cared for until death releaved her of her suffering at 12.M. Sunday. Her remains were taken to Paris, Texas and laid by the side of her husband who died last spring. She leaves two small children, besides a father and mother, brothers and sisters. Starling CHASTINE was badly burned about the hands in his heroic efforts to save his sister. Mrs. CHASTINE miraculously escaped death by having on a woolen dress which was badly charred but did not blaze. The entire town sympathizes with the family in the loss of the daughter and sister in such a terrible and shocking manner.
