Surnames: Dillard Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/kYB.2ACE/1630.3.1 Message Board Post: Thanks so much for posting this obituary. I really appreciate all the effort to locate it and post it for the benefit of those of us who have ancestral ties to this family. As a point of information for other researchers of this Dillard family I should point out a few inaccuracies in the obit, however, so that they don’t lead anyone down a wrong research path. Joseph George Dillard (who went by George) was not born in Goodland, Indian Territory although the family lived near there in the early 1860's. Instead, he was born on 9 October 1856 in Carrollton, Carroll County, MS. He is enumerated in the 1860 US Federal Census for Carrollton, Carroll County, MS, 4th Police District, census dated 16 August 1860. In this census George is listed as being 4 years old, born in Mississippi, living in the household of his parents, Hamilton & Elizabeth Dillard. Also listed in this census are George’s younger brothers, William Benjamin Dillard (age 3) and Hamilton Josiah Dillard, Jr. (age 10 months), both born in Mississippi. Hamilton Jr. would later in life go by the name Josiah Hamilton Dillard, aka J.H. Dillard, or “Foot” Dillard, a well-known pioneer in the Carter County, OK area. Also, George’s parents came to Indian Territory from Mississippi in the spring of 1861, just after the start of the Civil War. The obit suggests incorrectly that they came in about 1846 (65 years prior to George’s death in 1911). I suspect this was the best information available at the time George’s obituary was written, but I thought it might be useful to others to post some additional facts.
