    3. Sandi, I already had bios for some of these fellows on the Grady County archives page. There were at least two missed in the story. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/grady/gradybios.html They are listed a peace officers on the index page. Maybe I should go back and fix that. 1. Grady County Officers Killed in the Line of Duty
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Goodwin - Morris - Scott - Anderson - Tate - Wilson - Smith - Nowka - Classification: Death Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kYB.2ACE/1846 Message Board Post: May 30, 2006 Those who gave all Jason Clarke The Tuttle Times CHICKASHA — Some of their lives were taken by bandits, others taken by fellow officers, but all their lives were given in the protection of the people. In the history of Grady County, eight law enforcement officers have died in the line of service. Four Chickasha officers, two county deputies, a Tuttle officer and a Verden officer, each gave a sacrifice that has been buried under time. Sheriff Kieran McMullen has a plan to change that, however. In a memorial to be dedicated on May 31, Grady County will honor those law enforcement officers made the ultimate sacrifice. Standing four and a half feet tall, bearing the seal of the county, the memorial will read “Those who gave all” and “We walk the streets they served.” Below the list of names: • Chickasha Chief Emmett Goodwin • Deputy Sheriff Edden Morris • Chickasha Asst. Chief Sam Scott • Verden Marshal Alexander A. Anderson • Chickasha Patrolman Henry A. “Texas” Tate • Deputy Sheriff James A. Wilson • Chickasha Sgt. Herschel A. Smith • Tuttle Night Watchman August G. Nowka The dedication ceremony will be held Wednesday, May 31, at 5 p.m. at the flag pole in front of the Law Enforcement Center. Sheriff Kieran McMullen encouraged any surviving family members of the officers to attend the ceremony. Chickasha Chief Emmett Goodwin Shot February 1, 1909 Goodwin served as the day chief for the Chickasha Police. On Feb. 1, 1909, he and his brother, Officer Joe Earl, were walking down Chickasha Avenue when they met up with Night Chief Bill Thomas. Thomas and Goodwin began to argue over the comment that Goodwin had allowed the town to run wide open. When Goodwin made the comment that Thomas had as much power as he, Thomas drew his gun and shot Goodwin in the head three times. A gun battle ensued between Earl and Thomas. Earl was wounded and Thomas got away. He later turned himself in at the station and was charged with Goodwin’s murder. Deputy Sheriff Edden Morris Shot Dec. 21, 1909 Deputy Morris was assisting railroad detectives when he was fatally shot. He and anther deputy responded to a report that thieves had broken into a moving boxcar and had thrown slabs of meat off the train. Searching the area where the meat had been thrown, the two deputies and two Rock Island detectives came upon an unarmed man loading large sides of bacon into a sac. The men partially surrounded the suspect, and when he began to run, they chased guns drawn. Gaining on the subject the officers began to fire. The suspect was struck in the head, but survived. Through the high weeds, a bullet also found its way into the gut of Morris, fatally wounding him. Chickasha Asst. Chief Sam Scott Shot September 29, 1918 Asst. Chief Scott and another officer were looking for two deserters from Ft. Sill. The two men were spotted near the Rock Island Bridge, and the officers were able to capture one of the men, Fred Woodall. While Scott stayed with Woodall, the other officer went in search of the remaining deserter. When he returned, unsuccessful, he found Scott, shot through the liver and kidneys, and Woodall gone. When captured on Oct. 2, Woodall said it was the other soldier, Virgie Kitson, who had shot Scott. Scott died two days later on Oct. 4. Kitson was later apprehended and was sentenced to life in prison for Scott’s murder. Verden Marshal Alexander A. Anderson Bludgeoned with a pipe, December 3, 1925 Marshal Anderson was killed while searching a car for illegal whiskey. Anderson was searching for the whiskey when one of the occupants reportedly struck him repeatedly with a metal pipe. He was then moved to a nearby railroad boxcar and beaten several more times. Anderson died a short time later. Chickasha Patrolman Henry A. “Texas” Tate Shot December 16, 1930 Officer Tate and his partner had gone to the home of George B. Hale to serve a warrant on some stolen clothing when they discovered a half gallon of whiskey. Hale’s son Clifford hit Tate over the head with a stock of a shotgun, then retrieved the officer’s weapon and shot him in the abdomen three times before his partner could react. Tate’s partner shot Clifford Hale in the chest causing him to drop the gun, and then fired at George Hale when he picked up the weapon. Both Clifford and George Hale recovered from their wounds and were charged with Tate’s murder. Deputy Sheriff James A. Wilson Shot May 31, 1935 Deputy Wilson was shot and killed in Commanche County while assisting law enforcement there in the hunt for two bank robbers. The two men and the two women with them had been accused of a Fletcher highway robbery and the robbery of the Elgin Bank. Wilson and Sheriff Jim Bond had tracked the robbers to a farm house. When speaking to the homeowners, the deputies were told they should move on. Having lost the track, the Sheriff Bond and Wilson realized the bandits were in the home, most likely threatening the homeowners. They returned to the home and asked for a glass of water, Bond later said. Noticing how anxious the wife was, they asked for and received consent to look around. Wilson stepped into the house and told the men to come out. He was met with a gun shot to the chest and a shot gun blast to the back. Wilson was able to shoot one of the men as he fell to the ground. According to news reports a veritable barrage opened up on the farmhouse as other searchers outside began to fire. Machine gun, rifle and pistol shots were exchanged between the officers and the bandits. The house was rushed by Oklahoma City officers who had arrived to aid, and Charles Sands and Leon Siler were taken into custody, along with the two women with them. Sands and Siler then faced charges in Commanche County for Wilson’s murder. Chickasha Sgt. Herschel A. Smith Shot March 13, 1936 Friday the 13th proved unlucky for Sgt. Smith, who was shot while a fellow officer was checking out a sawed off shotgun. Smith, fellow officer Jim Sivley and Oliver Cornelius, and a federal officer from Lawton were in the communications area when Sivley went to show Cornelius the weapon. When Sivley closed the breech of the gun, it discharged striking Smith in the leg. Gangrene set into the wound and Smith died three days later. Tuttle Night Watchman August G. Nowka Shot August 20, 1939 Watchman Nowka was shot when he confronted three suspects who were believed to be connected to robberies in Chickasha, Minco, Enid and Blanchard. Marshal L.C. Force and Nowka attempted to arrest the three suspect in the Thompson Cafe in Tuttle. Nowka was shot three times in the altercation that ensued. Force was also shot in the leg. The suspects were able to escape and were later caught near the Kansas-Oklahoma border north of Enid.

Donnie's brother Richard is married to my 1st cousin. I do remember sending you an email address for Christy. Did you get that?
