Mattalee grew up in the Minco-Tuttle area alongside her 6 brothers, Eritt, Sam, John, Ollie, Roy and Jesse, as well as her 3 sisters Dixie, Sadie, and Irma Dean. Mattalee's family made their living from farming. Mattalee married Leonard Hubert Wells on Saturday, July 15, 1933 and born unto this union are 3 sons and 3 daughters their first child, a son, Carroll (born in 1934), who, tragically, did not survive. Carroll is buried in the Silver City Cemetery, Tuttle, Oklahoma A daughter, Lee Anna was gifted unto them in 1935, another son, Walter Allen in 1938, A son, Jerry Don, was born in 1943, did not survive and is buried in Babyland, Fairview Cemetery, Tuttle, Grady County, Oklahoma ,then came daughter, Reba June in 1944 and in 1947 another daughter, Janett, was entrusted unto the family of Hubert and Mattalee Wells. The Wells' family lived in Tuttle until the year of 1949, then re-located to the areas of Choctaw, Oklahoma City, the community of Dare, Moore, Yukon and Blanchard areas. In 1968, they moved to the Cole area where she resided until 1999 where she moved to Georgia to live with her daughter, Reba and her family. She returned to Oklahoma and entered the Shanoan Springs Center, in Chickasha, where she resided until her passing. Their daughter, Lee Anna, married LD 'Pig" Taylor in 1950, and they presented Hubert and Mattalee with 8 grand children: Danny Ray, Carol, Kay, Gary Lee, Terry Wayne, Linda Gayle, Kathy Anne, Roger Lynn & Cheryl Linette Their son, Walter Allen married Edna Mae Booth, and presented them with 2 more grandchildren Robin & Mary Jo Their daughter, Reba June married Clarence E. Corley in 1962 and presented them with a grandson James David Their daughter, Janett, married James Arlen Atchley in 1963 and presented them with 3 additional granchildren daughter, Jessica, did not survive, and is buried in Fairview Cemetery, Tuttle, Grady County, Oklahoma, son, Clayton Bradley and daughter, Tonja Danette Atchley. Mattalee worked on the family farm and was a homemaker and then she accepted a job through Southwestern Bell to work in their cafeteria, when that cafeteria closed, she took a job at Cattleman's Cafeteria in Capital Hill, then she accepted a job with FAA and became head supervisor over the cafeteria retiring in 1982. Mattalee Wells was a founding member of the Cole Baptist Church. Mattalee was active in the Cole Baptist Church serving as Sunday School Teacher, assisted with Bible School and accompanied the youth to Falls Creek Church Camps. Mattalee loved her Lord and served Him faithfully. One could never find dust on Mattalee's Bible and it was always out in the open within her reach. She enjoyed traveling, visiting with relatives, friends and neighbors, sharing her gift of crafts, gifting and teaching many with her beautiful art for quilt-making and crocheting, sewing, canning and cooking. She loved spending time with her family, adored her grandchildren, and their children. Although only acquiring a Sixth grade formal education, Mattalee became a self-educated woman and loved to read and write sending countless letters and cards to friends and relatives. Hubert and Mattalee celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1983 amongst a host of relatives and friends Grandma always had the most beautiful of gardens, flowers and vegetables grew rampant. Her strawberries were huge, red and sweet, and she grew a tangle of fresh mint. Mattalee gifted babies with her beautiful hand-crafted quilts and afghans, as well as all newlyweds. She gifted her neighbors, her community and her Church with her neverending supply of beautiful hand-crafts. She would sit at her sewing machine for hours creating beautiful aprons and pillows. Mattalee loved to cook and made wonderful meals for her family on holidays, or anytime anyone stopped by. She took food to the elderly and sick people, as well as providing care and assistance to them. She loved to travel to visit friends and family. Grammie was always the first in the kitchen and the last to leave. She would have to be dragged out just to sit down and rest awhile. She would sit perched on the edge of a chair, anxious to begin the next meal. Mattalee and Hubert's son Walter Allen passed away in 1983, at the age of 45 Hubert, her husband of 54 years passed away in 1987. Daughter, Janett in 1996, at the age of 49 Son-In-Law James Atchley passed away in 1999 at the age of 56 Mattalee cared for each of them during their lengthy illnesses. Mattalee is preceeded in death by both of her parents, Walter and Cora Lee Wood, Her brothers Eritt, Sam, John, Ollie and Roy Wood Her sister, Dixie Beaty Her son's Carroll, Jerry and Walter Her daughter, Janett and her husband James Grandaughters, Linda Gayle Taylor in 1966 at age 9 and Jessica Atchley, newborn Grandson Gary Lee Taylor, in 1986, at age 31 Great-Grandaughter, Leslie Anne Spivey in 2000, at age 15 Mattalee is survived by her sisters, Sadie Carr and husband Bill, Maysville, Oklahoma Irma Dean Lee and her husband Cletis, Amber Oklahoma. Brother, Jesse Wood, Sulphur, Oklahoma Her two daughters, Lee Anna Taylor, Blanchard, Oklahoma Reba June Corley and her husband, Clarence, Marietta, Georgia 11 Grandchildren 27 Great Grandchildren 6 Great-Great Grandchildren as well as a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral Services were held in Tuttle, Oklahoma, under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home. Pallbears were: James David Corley, Clayton Bradley Atchley, Michael Edward Spivey, Terry Wayne Taylor, and Roger Lynn Taylor, all grandsons. Services were provided by: Rev. Laverne Goodnight, Tabler Pentacostal Church, Mrs. Tenna Garrett, Cole Baptist Church, eulogy was given by Kathy Taylor Spivey, grandaughter, Mrs. Lee Anna Wells Taylor, daughter, sang, the fiddle was played by Mr. Junior Streber, and lunch was graciously provided at the home of Junior and Jean Streber, Tuttle, Oklahoma. Mattalee is interred in the Fairview Cemetery, Tuttle, Grady County, Oklahoma. Rest in blessed peace, Dear Grammie.

I am looking for information on: Any woman who made any of the Oklahoma land runs and got land in her own name. Any family who made any of the 5 land runs or obtained land in one of the lotteries. Any family who got Indian allotment land Any family who was in Indian Territory or Oklahoma Territory before 1907. Any family who started a business in those early days. I would welcome any information from just their names and the dates that they were in Oklahoma to family histories, family stories, letters, diaries and etc. If the information requires a download please contact me before sending it.
