    3. If the information on birth/death indexes placed online are from newspapers, individual records, or any other source besides the county or state registrars..they can be kept online. Rootsweb & others have started putting these online as they are taken from cemetery books, etc. This law was pretty much gutted.. Yes, I would need to show ID & sign a form if I do a lookup for you... but I sign my name now.. and I even put my phone number on the forms..(I submit several and then come back another day to look at them). This law is not much different than the present one.. other than the maiden name/ss# issue. I think SS# is a non necessary item anyways... I have checked my own family on the CA death index... clicked the SS # and gotten a Not found... (due to human error in recording the #). Maiden names are a loss... but if you find the death date... you can usually get an obit... and it may have that information. ... if not check with the cemetery of record..they probably do.
