    1. [OKGEN ] The MILLS family
    2. I am researching my Mom's family here in Texas and I have a brickwall that I need some help with. My Great Grandmother was Melissa Lena MILLS, born August 20, 1866 in Walker County, Texas, married November 27, 1866 in Huntsville, Walker County, Texas and died November 14, 1955 in Goodrich, Polk County, Texas. Her father was Uriah H. MILLS and her mother was Caroline Elizabeth GILMORE. She married William Andrew WILLIAMSON, born November 29, 1862 in Montgomery County, Texas and died April 5, 1901 in Walker County, Texas. That sure doesn't seem like it says enough about my Grandma Williamson. I remember her so well. She was a tiny lady and very prim and proper. She always kept her hair brushed and braided, with the braids wrapped around her head and pinned just right. She wore a long dress and a sunbonnet every where she went. When she would to our house for a visit she would go through the dress material my Mom would have and if she thought we had too much she would take some of it for some of the family who did not have. Mom would hide our "good stuff" for school and such if she knew Grandma was coming. She could make biscuits that were so light, my Granddaddy, her son, would say that we needed to put a rock on them so they would say on the plate. She would just beam and smile when her children would talk like that about her. She never had much to say but when she would sit down beside you and talk you could just feel love radiate from her. When we would go to Goodrich, Texas to visit her, she would let me sleep with her in the big feather bed she had. I know it was just a regualr bed but to a little girl it seem to go on forever. She wore a long nightgown, winter and summer and would make me one every year. Oh, how I wish I had just one of them now. I miss her. She also made us take castor oil and 3-S tonic when she came in the spring to clean us out and it did clean us out. She would have Mother make each of us a new sunbonnet when she came and we would have to wear it the whole time she was there. I always hated that but would sure like to know how to make one now. When she came to visit you never knew when she would decide she was ready to go. She would just walk into the kitchen with her little bag and her sunbonnet on and she was ready to go. It didn't matter if it was 5 in the morning and Mom would have Dad and us girls to get ready for work and school or 5 in the evening and Mom would be cooking supper, she was ready to go and would just state that if Mom was too busy Grandma would walk back to Dickinson, Texas where my Granddaddy lived. That was quite a trip so my Mom would just drop everything and take Grandma back to Dickinson. She was the matriarch of our family and she let you know it. I have been told that some of the MILLS and GILMORE families went to Oklahoma and Arkansas. If anyone has any information on Grandma's families I would really appreciate any help I can find. Well, enough of my ramblings for a Monday morning. I sort of feel like I have been visiting with her just writing this. Thanks Dot in Texas
