for the latest news on the Northwest earthquake http://dailynews.yahoo.com/fc/breaking/seattle_earthquake
Maria, Portland/Mt.Angel doesn't have any problems. Airport is open and we have power. Some building damage, but nothing like Seattle. Mostly stuff falling off grocery shelves. Buildings are still evacuated until they are checked for structural damage, especially downtown. I've been through several quakes and this really wasn't anything. Because the quake was so deep 7.0 doesn't mean a lot. If it had been near the surface then there would have been a huge amount of damage!!! Both states are well prepared and just waiting for the big quake that's to come someday. This whole area is full of faults. Paula/Portland
It shook pretty good here on this ole mountain. hanging light swung pretty good and cups hanging in china cupboard swaying. Put two cracks in foundation of house. Hubby looked out window about 3-4 minutes after it happen and water in our swimming pool was still moving. Kinda scary but at least no major damage to us. were without phone service for over an hour. One thing of concern now is by Renton, Wa (by Seattle). Mudslides have dammed up the Cedar River and is causing it to back up and flood. They are trying to get the slides removed enough to get river flowing right again. They are afraid if they just break loose on their own all at once a housing division right below will be flooded. Some of the houses above the slides already have close to a foot of water in some of them. Part of hwy 101 on the coast has given way. Windows are out of the SeaTac airtower and structure damage to the pillars. They have brought in a fifth wheel trailer that is a miniature air tower but figure it may be more than 24 hours before SeaTac airport is completely open. They did let a couple of international flights land cause of low fuel otherwise most have been diverted to Portland airport. More and more reports of damage are coming in. More damage to our state capital building than they originally thought. And more injuries are being reported. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dan" <wb@wvi.com> To: <CherokeeMAINVillage@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 28, 2001 11:47 AM Subject: [CherokeeMAINVillage] RE:EARTHQUAKE > Seattle epi center > I felt it here in my chair > And am taping the news as it happens > > Dan > > > Good mannors make healthy lists <G> > Automated commands and our web page > For more information: http//:angelfire.com/or/matney/cheroP.html > Post message: CherokeeMAINVillage@yahoogroups.com > Subscribe: CherokeeMAINVillage-subscribe@yahoogroups.com > Unsubscribe: CherokeeMAINVillage-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com > List owner: CherokeeMAINVillage-owner@yahoogroups.com > URL to this page: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CherokeeMAINVillage > > > Your use of Yahoo! Earthquake was a 7 point - felt all the way to Salt Lake. More damage reported in the Seattle area. Seattle/Tacoma airport closed and Amtrack. 12 people hospitalized for now. Portland buildings are still evacuated, but little damage. No information on out lining towns near Seattle. 17, 000 people without power in the Seattle area. Don't call Seattle lines are tied up and needed for emergency calls. Epicenter was about 7 miles out of Olympia 30 miles deep. It was in the Sound. Worst earthquake since 1949 in this area. It cracked the dome at the State Capital. I won't be saying anything more and tying up the list. If anyone has family or wants information just email me privately and I will do what I can. Helen wanted me to let everyone know that for some reason she's been kicked off the list. She got a message saying that she was kicked off due to bouncing mail, except that her mailbox is empty. Since Rootsweb has done their latest upgrade or whatever I've had this same problem on another list & a list I run there's been some that's had this problem too? For those that have relatives or friends in the Seattle, Wn. and Portland, Or. area and have heard of the earthquake, don't worry. There has not been a tremendous amount of damage at the moment. Nothing in Oregon and very little in Seattle. Phone lines are very busy and most can't get through. There are no fires report. Reports have been that it was between a 4.7 and a 6.7. No one can decide since it just happened. Anyway, don't worry if you can't reach a friend or family. There have been no reports of real damage, just real busy phone lines with people checking. Paula/Portland
I have the following Pryor Cemetery information, on the Pittsburg Co. site. (Info was submitted by a fellow researcher). I do hope it will help some other researchers. http://www.rootsweb.com/~okpitts2/pryorcem.htm l Thanks, Vivian Sternenberg Pittsburg Co. CC
