    2. I just had to share this. I hope it doesn't offend anyone, if it does I am sorry. Tina Knapp A Death In The Family The applicant for life insurance was finding it difficult to fill out the application. The salesman asked what the trouble was, and the man said that he couldn't answer the question about the cause of death of his father. The salesman wanted to know why. After some embarrassment, the client explained that his father had been hanged and that he had hoped to hide this fact from his dad's descendants. The salesman pondered this for a moment. "Just write: 'Father was taking part in a public function when the platform gave way.'"

She got a buzz out of your earlier message. Would you please tell us how you are connected? >> The short version is that Herbert's grandfather, Thomas Chelton FRIEND, was my GGGgrandfather. That's not a typo -- I descend through a succession of eldest daughters so the generations are now out of sync. But -- not recalling how much family history I sent earlier -- I'll throw in a few more details: T. C. homesteaded in northeastern Oklahoma Co., near the border of the Unassigned Lands, with wife Malinda FILBERT and their youngest daughters. He seems to have been the first of the group to arrive, filing his claim on June 15, 1889. [I'm still trying to determine how they found out there were a number of unclaimed homesteads in that particular area.] Sons Charles Mathews and William Lincoln FRIEND [Herbert's father], and son-in-law Willard SWEAT [husband of daughter Harriet] quickly followed and settled nearby. Some of their homesteads were on the Indian Meridian itself. When the adjacent Iowa Lands were opened in 1891, my GGgrandgrandfather [Andrew Francis MILLIGAN] made the run and staked his claim just across the road. He was married to T.C.'s oldest surviving daughter, Mary Jane FRIEND. By 1900, Malinda had died, as had Charles' wife and one of William's daughters. T.C.'s two youngest daughters, who had married neighboring homesteaders, remained in the area -- as did my line. Sharon McAllister

My FRIEND line was in O.T. in 1889, had spent brief periods in both KS & NE, a number of years in Gentry Co., MO before that. I've traced them on back to KY, but not to TN. Haven't run across either RIGGS or STEWART in this line. My COLE/CROCKETT line came to O.T. about the same time and settled just a few miles from the FRIENDS. They, too, had lived in KS, MO & KY -- before that, they spent some 40 years in Obion Co. TN. Tradition has it that there were several families from Obion Co. who ended up in the Luther area. I've been able to identify the SIMMONs & WHEELERs, still searching for others. That's where the STEWART connection may come in. There were STEWARTs in Obion Co. during that period, and evidence on the 1860 census that one of them married a SIMMONS. Lots of STEWARTs in the Luther area by 1900 -- but that's a 40-year gap in the records and I really haven't tried to unscramble them because I haven't yet found a family member to work with. I'll look for Jacob/Jake -- can you give me any other names? Even approximate dates? Sharon McAllister
