Sharon McAllister, Sharon Crawford and I have had some fun with what Sharon M and Sharon C call "Luther Cousins". Luther is a very small town east of Edmond. Just about all the long time residents are related in some form or another by many marriages [ as it is in many small towns ]. Sharon M and I are related through the BENNETT line. The two Sharon's are related by marriage [ one of them would have to explain it ]. Thus Sharon C and I were "Luther Cousins". I think Sharon C said that she had a link into one of my lines at some point [ I'm ashamed to say that I haven't pursued it ] so that we are in fact cousins. So I'm not sure where that leaves the "Luther Cousin" thing. What I, and my family, have always used "shirt tail cousin" to mean is someone that is related to you but so far off that it really has no meaning. Something like 5th cousin 12 times removed or some silliness like that. I have a LOT of shirt tail kin in the area near Marshall Oklahoma [ east of highway 74 and north of highway 33 ]. Many of the families in that area had marriable children about the time of the land runs so there were a lot of marriages from the start. My BENNETT's had 7 children [ small family by the standards of the day ] and that makes 6 families that were related to mine, about 1900 they started having children [ 9 in my line ] and by the 1920's [ when my mom was born ] I was related to just about everyone in the area. It was about that time that many of the family started to move about more so they didn't tend to marry in such a small pool of families. By the 40's and the war no one has stayed anywhere for long since. I read a book one time that said something to the effect that wars were a form of natural selection in that they tended to dilute the gene pool in any one area. But I think they mean the same thing. Someone who is related to someone else who is related to you but not really related to you. WHEW.... now that is a mouth full. For example.. I grew up with the two folks - a brother and a sister. Their mother was a cousin to my mother's brother's wife. So they were not really related but they were very much an accepted part of the family. Take care - Emma
I have two kids and my sister-in-law Juanita, has four kids. Her sister JoAnn has three kids. My kids and Juanita's kids are cousins, and Juanita's kids and JoAnn's kids are cousins, but my kids and JoAnns kids are not cousins.(we call them shirt tail cousins) It works for us because they all call us Aunt and Uncle. We love them all. (smile) Martha Berry Faletti _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Is it really a cousin or someone who just claims to be a cousin due to the familiarity with the family? I hope I asked that correctly! >> In our family, there are both "shirt-tail cousins" and "shirt-tail kin". Each is just a short way of saying that there is a not-by-blood relationship, without going into all the details. A few examples, from the simple to the somewhat complicated: 1. My cousin's spouse is my cousin-by-marriage. No jargon needed here, because I'm referring to an indiviual who married a blood relative. 2. My cousin's cousin & I are "shirt-tail cousins". Although we share no grandparents, we are part of an extended family linked by marriage. The relationship itself is easy to explain, so the term doesn't some into play very often. 3. When my best friend's uncle's brother-in-law's Ggrandson married my grandmother's first-cousin's brother-in-law's Ggranddaughter, my friend & I became "shirt-tail kin". That's four blood-lines linked by three marriages in different generations. In short, "shirt-tail ______" means someone who's part of the extended family but not directly related by blood. In terms of genealogy, we all know the value of locating a distant cousin -- sometimes I've learned as much or more from shirt-tail kin! It all depends on which lines have had genealogists or family historians and what information they've passed down. Sharon McAllister
