    3. Mom, Be extremely carful of opening attachments. Due to the virus scar that was connected with the original request for this one, I typed it instead of scanning and sending an attachment. Dec. 12, 1930 Seminole people went plum crazy about the baseball way back in 1910-11-12. In fact, the whole state of Oklahoma caught the fever in those years on the great national pastime. Those were years when Seminole played real big league baseball, such as they have never done since and, while the whole state was playing "good" baseball. Seminole fans went them one better and backed a team that defeated the leaders in the state league. There was not much more than a handful of people in Seminole at that time, but they were good sports and real fans, and in those days, every man, woman and child within a radius of 25 miles took a couple of days off and drove to Seminole to take in a good ballgame. It was in 1910 when all this trouble started and the "town" team made such a good showing that everybody here went baseball-minded and began to build up a stronger and better aggregation for 1911, and then put the finishing touches on it in 1912 when the "Seminole Indians" or "Seminole Chieftains" took on all comers from any to the cities and defeated them all, including Oklahoma City and Little Rock. Back in 1910, practically every town and city in the state had a fair baseball team. The sprit seemed to move them all at about the same time and there was developed at that time hundreds of above the average ball players all over Oklahoma. A sate league was formed. Holdenville, Wewoka, Okemah, Prague, all much larger than Seminole at that time, had strong organizations and were looking for games. So Seminole decided to get its feet wet. Seminole was blessed with a number of good substantial baseball fans and under the leadership of Ed P. SMITH, George and Jim KILLINGSWORTH and a number of others, they began to form a nucleus of a team much to their surprise found a number of boys within a reasonable distance of the city who had or were playing a strong game and with the addition of a few, they picked up in other towns by furnishing them jobs here, Seminole was soon playing cities baseball. The addition of Jim THORPE, a Sac and Fox Indian put the Seminole team in a commanding position and they defeated everything in this territory during the yea of 1911. THORPE later went to Carlysle and became one of the greatest players and all around athlete in the country. He was a member of the Olympic team at Stockholm in 1912. Among those pictured as members of the team were Charles ALDRIDGE, Henry HARBER, Floyd INGRAM, Ed SMITH, T. H. (Pap) SMITH and Ambrose MONTGOMERY. It was in 1912 that Seminole beat the world. They lost Jim THORPE but they added a number of other good men. The years of 1912 was by far the greatest baseball year Seminole ever saw and probably ever will see. Out of a total of 45 games played the Chieftains won 38 and most of the seven games lost were due to the fact that the team was traveling and did not get sufficient rest and sleep. 3. I have just received a request for a lookup from the "100 Years Of History, 1896-1996" Maud History. I thought part of her request was worth sharing with the list. A neat story I thought. <Snip> My husband's great uncle Roy Knight died in Maud, OK, and I am trying to see what you might have. I am working on the genealogy for the Knight family primarily because my husband, Henry Clay Knight, son of Raymond Walter Knight, has been MIA in Vietnam for over 32 years, and has finally been found... His remains are being shipped home, and are to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in May. He never knew his father's side of the family, and I am trying to do a parchment to place in his coffin with him. Vickie Neill Taylor flip@okplus.com

    3. You can send off for the Military pension & service records to Mo., but it may not end up coming from them. I sent off for my great grandfather's pension records in Mo., thinking they'd come from Okla. as that's where he lived or in Ga. as that's where he ended up getting out at. But after months of waiting & re-filling out applications & waiting a yr. I ended up sending for his Spanish American War pension records to my State capital...in IDAHO (where I live). Totally weird....but soooooo worth the wait :) Alli ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill Archer" <bjarcher@worldnet.att.net> To: <OKGEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 28, 2001 3:10 AM Subject: RE: [OKGEN ] Military Question > Shelly, the county courthouse may have the discharge papers, but if you want > to find out anything about his actual service you need to get his service > records from the military. 3. Shelly, the county courthouse may have the discharge papers, but if you want to find out anything about his actual service you need to get his service records from the military. Service records for WWII and later are kept at the National Personnel Records Center, St. Louis, MO. You have to submit Standard Form 180 with the state he enlisted from and the branch of service. If you have his service number and dates of service that will probably make it much easier for them to find his records. See their website at: http://www.nara.gov/regional/stlouis.html Good luck, Bill

    2. Shelia, Sorry, to hear you had such problems with this virus. Don't fret - it's been happening to several people and everyone should understand. Good grief, it took McAfee 2 days or so to come up with a method to detect and take care of this virus, I was told. As humans we have things happen that were not always aware of happening. Everyone should be understanding............... Glad to see all is well now. We just have to keep ourselves a little more alert right now. I worry about other family members using our computer and not realizing what they've done. <grin> Have a great day! Paula/Oreong

    3. Dear Members: I swear, I was bitten and this is what happened. We received 56 attachments this morning that viciously circled my e-mail system. The virus that was sent and, I swear I don't know how I got it other than yesterday when the warnings came across the e-mail, came into my inbox and before I could read it or even delete it, stuck it's self into my outbox. This morning, it sent it's self back to me over and over along with sending all of you that were messaging the list the same thing I received. The e-mail, stating I was sending it did exactly what I was told yesterday that it would do. I deleted that message along with everyone of the others I received yesterday to no avail. Everyone else was getting something sent out from ME when I was not sending anything at all!! Immediately, upon discovery of this incident and infection, I shut down my system. Upgraded my antivirus program and have finally nipped it in the BUTT ... I hope I did!! No, I did not send naked pictures of myself or anyone else. No, I did not respond to the Military Question. I have sent nothing out to anyone including the list until NOW. I am so sorry if this caused anyone as much grief as it has caused me. I wish people that do these things would stop. Please accept my apology for any inconvenience this has caused anyone at all. I swear, I was an innocent victim like most everyone else that suffered through this just as I did. Obviously, my personal system needs to be upgraded and it showed me that my poor old computer needs major work in keeping up with this nastiness that continues to be past around for some sick practical joke. I love this list and would do nothing to jeopardize it's reputation or my own. Shelia C. BACHELDER

    3. Hi all - EVERYONE should read this page http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/announce.html#virus heed their advice or plan to spend some time cleaning up your systems. I do not plan to open any attachments unless the submitter has notified me in advance that I will be recieving an attachment. Run your virus checker *everytime* you download email. If you do not have a virus checker, take advantage of the free ones online - use it often until this passes. Marti __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! 1. [OKGEN ] Virus "IS NOT " from Rootsweb
    2. For the new people - you "are not" picking up this virus or any other virus from the Rootsweb lists. Rootsweb doesn't allow attachments to be sent through their lists. The way this latest virus that is going through the list was explained to another list is: A person downloads and opens an attachment from someone they know, thinking it is safe, since they know this person. The virus then gets into your "unread" mail and sends it's self out to those people. Sometimes it will use your address as the sender, sometimes it will use an unrecognizable address. "Do Not Open" any paper clips or attachments, until you check with the person who sends it to you first. That is where this virus is getting some people as you probably recognize the sender as being from one of your lists and think it is a reply to a query or something and download and open the attachment. My new virus scanner for some reason didn't pick up the last one I received, but I recognized and deleted the attachment and email. Paula/Oregon

    2. Shelia, I'm writing this to the list as I don't think you will recognize my address and may not open the email. I just received a reply from you on an email I had sent the list yesterday. The only thing it showed on the reply was "Look to the attachment." Did you send this email and attachment? I'm thinking that you didn't and that you may have the new virus and want to scan your computer and repair your computer. This is one of the ways this new virus is sending itself. I deleted your email when I saw the content, so it didn't affect my computer. Everyone needs to have a "heads up" on this new virus. One list owner reported as having received it 12 times yesterday. I won't go into to details as I can't explain it like he did.<grin> Anyway "watch" what you download and open. Even when you know that person, it could be this particular virus. I'm not downloading any attachments right now. Paual/Oregon

    3. If you remember, I advised someone on this list to immediately delete any message that had a paperclip and the advise to look at the attachment. Today, I received a message from Cunningham, complete with paperclip and advise to look at the attachment. This message was sent directly to me, not via the list. This is a dangerous virus. PLEASE do not open any of them. This may be the wrong place to post such a suggestion, but at the risk of violating list rules I would encourage all listers to join another list that deals with this subject, along with all other viruses. It is called The Virus List and you join it just like you would any other RootsWeb list. It doesn't matter if you understand everything they talk about on that list, because I sure don't, but I understand enough to not open any attachments without first double checking that it actually came from who it says it did. You can learn a lot from that list, so please join and just lurk, read the other posts and save your computer from crashing.
