As you can see I posted this to a few lists. I am hoping to give my husband something really great for Father's Day this year. I will keep looking and posting until I find his father or until I can no long type or write. Looking for: We are looking for a Frank Knapp born about 1924 in Texas. In 1952 he married a Mary J. just had to add my 2 cents<G>since ancestry.com now owns roots web, i doubt it will be long! that will really be a shame and send me back to snail mail in a hurry or else i'll just call it a day with what i have, nobody in my immediate family cares about geneaology anyway. and i'm tired of beating my head against brick walls.
Nobody in the immediate family may care, but what about the generations to come? If we give up now, what will happen later? What are we doing genealogy for? Ourselves? Our Ancestor's? Or Our descendants? Someone, somewhere has what you need....Ancestry.com, Genealogy.com, FamilyTree.com.....they all got the info. somewhere. Plus, if you complain to them enough about not having access or limited access....it might change. Alli :) Researching: ABRAM, JOHNSON, PHARISS, ADAMS, LOVELL, McKAY, McCALL, WHITE, THOMPSON. All ended up in Okla. around Chelsea/Tulsa. I have seldom found anything worth paying for a membership. About once or twice a year they have an interesting database that comes online. Oh Well, it was fun while it lasted.. I may be in the minority but, I have never found anything at this site that wasn't free somewhere else. I was a member for a year and what a wasted $70. All their census data that I needed was indexes only and I can go to censuslinks.com and get even actual images of censuses. Thanks for letting get some steam out of my system. Just waiting until rootsweb starts charging. Howard Grisso SMITH KANE BATESEL MOLLOY MORRISON Medford, OR ----------------------------------------------- FREE! Dear Shelia-I noticed your list of surnames at the end of your post & I thought should write.I know of a family with the last name of GUPTILL who lives in Stockton,Ca.I don't know anything about their background &/or where they came from.If you think you may be a relative, please reply & I will send their address information to you so you might get in touch with them. http://community.webtv.net/KeplinSchwick/ Regards- Ms.Keplin K. Schwick
I also agree with the general comments made about Ancestry.com. I have almost NEVER gotten any information from their database. And when I did get a tiny bit of info,I already had it.I most certainly will not pay a membership for information I can get elsewhere for free. http://community.webtv.net/KeplinSchwick/ Regards- Ms.Keplin K. http://international.loc.gov/ammem/afctshtml/script.html http://www.newdeal.feri.org/misc/taylor.htm Don't know if these sites might help. My Grandparents (Duncan's) were also cotton pickers, migrant farm workers They had a farm in Farmersville Texas and lost it during the dust bowl days moved on to Oklahoma to pick Cotton and then most of the family went to Calif. I wish I knew more but almost everyone who knows anything has passed on. Angela
I just heard from a distant relative that sharecroppers were paid in cash but still had to register with the farmer that they worked for as being an employee with them the individual farmer paying them for services!? With that said, I wonder if they recorded these records anywhere other than with themselves? For instance, did they have to leave a list of employees with the big company buyers that bought their goods? To prove that they could get the job done within the time required? My Gramma picked cotton for several years after her mother died in 1918. Gramma was 13 at the time of her mother's death waiting for her Dad to arrive from Arkansas. He received the word that his X-wife had died almost a year after the fact. Leaving their only child without any parental guidance or assistance in life except for kind neighbors that took her in ... [I think?] I truly don't know!? Maybe an orphanage ... but I know she did "Pick Cotton" for several years either prior to her 1st marriage or even during her 1st marriage. In the Howe area of Oklahoma, was Cotton being raised? Was there such an arrangement with Cotton growers as to how you [the picker of the Cotton - " I could of said " Cotton Picker :o) ] the worker, paid? Gramma picked Cotton for 2 years or more during the late 1910's between 1919 - 1925 from what I understand through stories, this happened before she left the area of Howe! Maybe not in Howe, maybe somewhere in S.E. Oklahoma!? Any suggestions as to where to look for more facts and clues on this subject? I hope I explained that well enough? Shelia C. Billie from what I am hearing at seminars...Ancestry had to borrow multi million dollars from their investors to keep it going. They have fired at least 100 people at this point. And that the free search times were going to cease. Good luck in your search Kathy
Thank You so very much Carma

Thank you Sharon. That's not completely out of the realm of possibility but its pushing the limits. Earliest known child of my John and Mary was born ca 1867. Might be a good place to start looking. Shelby County is a lot smaller than Tennessee. (o:]>* Huggles *<[:o) Billie The three best words in the English Language: "I LOVE YOU" Pass them on!

Thanks Sharon. I was just half interested in one of their new databases. Tennessee Marriages for Welch/Walsh, John H. to Mary Margaurite _________ circa 1865/1866. They are my brick wall on that line. I have seldom found anything worth paying for a membership. About once or twice a year they have an interesting database that comes online.
