When my freebie time for being a supporter of Rootsweb was over at the end of December, I spent weeks trying to log onto Ancestry.com without thinking...it had become such an important part of my daily searching for new records for the GenWeb pages my daughter and I maintain. Finally, I subscribed for the 3 month time package, and then just last week I signed up for a year. I used to spend that money supporting Rootsweb, and consider supporting Ancestry as serving the same purpose. Bill, I had a Knott's jelly jar for copy change on my kitchen window sill in Houston, and when it was full I would treat myself to an all day visit to the Clayton Library, back when it was still in the original building. Daughter Eireann, who is 20 now, learned to write in those days by copying all the Sullivans in the indexes of books...she said they MUST be cousins. I was the librarian of the gen library in Tomball at the time, but really looked forward to the trips downtown...8-) LaRae

    2. I'm usually just a lurker....don't talk much. But, I must say that my first Genealogy experience was actually through Ancestry. For some reason I was surfing and decided to see if anything was on the internet about my family. So, I typed in my father's name. Needless to say I got lots of hits 'cause it's a common name... ( John Lewis). So, I then tried my gfather 'cause his wasn't as common. The one that got my attention was at Ancestry. I went straight to it......and lo and behold someone had uploaded a gedcom. I then had to get a program in order to read it. As it turns out....they had my Lewis history clear back to 1774!!! Now, I still have a lot of searching in order to locate some of the spouses and siblings of some of them but a lot of the names were in the file...about 1500 of them...and of course, I'm having to document ~but still...what a great find!!!! Just my 2 cents..... pj

    2. Alison Stevens
    3. Uncle! My two cents: I can understand why one would get disappointed with Ancestry and its commercial kin, because they might not have _enough_ data in the area one needs. That will change with time. The types of databases they are creating and maintaining only get better with age, barring gross mismanagement. Also, it does cost to use their data. The fee may or may not be nominal in one's opinion. On the other hand, there are some areas they have enormously useful data, and lots of it! It depends on what one already has, what one already needs, and how easy it is for one to get that information. I don't know how much it costs the commercial concerns to maintain the internet accesses and databases and message boards that they allow anyone to use for free, but it does cost some. Don't the people who buy pay subscriptions subsidize those who do not? Isn't it like public television? 2. Gene Hathcoat
    3. In this part of the state (Wagoner County) the farmer who owned the land got one third of the crop for the use of the land and a old house. You had to go to the bank to borrow the money to buy seed and horse feed. but the Bank would not loan all that you needed so the family would have to work for other farmers. To help out. and the farmer farmed his best land him self. The sharecropper got the worst land or by the river that flooded some times. (this was before we had the Dams) By the time the sharecropper gave one third to the farmer and payed the bank back the money he had borrowed . (if he was not flooded out) he was broke. some times he would stay one more year but most of the time he would move on. they payed by the pound for picking cotton 3 or 4 cents a pound a family might make $ 75 to $ 90 a week This was about 1950

I like free data like anyone else, but when I consider all the money I spent on round trips to Houston, quarters on copy machines and microfilm readers, etc., etc., the subscription fee is pennies in comparison! But I thought another opinion was also due. I think it depends on where your folks are - location that is. I happen to be hunting a lot of folks in Connecticut. And they have lots of early wills on line that have been very helpful to me. And would have cost me a lot to order in terms of copies. Have also found other information there of help as well. So for me the subscription has been well worth it. I think it varies with what you are needing. Thanks and take care - Emma
