I met T and Lon at Altus while they were microfilming at Tillman County. We had lunch. They are easy to get to know. They know my great-uncle Lee in Weatherford, Okla. Hope they have safe travels. They are & it was so neat to meet them. It was a short visit, we had lunch with them. But it was fun. My son took to them right off, was non-stop chatter & T was great with him. Talked with him almost the whole time. This time if we can meet them, she won't have to worry about being over run with chatter ....well at least not with the normal chatter. Steven's only doing baby chatter right now :) (I'm still jealous that you got them for a whole night...even though we didn't/don't have the room for guest's yet) :) Alli :) ----- Original Message ----- From: "glswings" <glswings@pacifier.com> To: <OKGEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 15, 2001 9:08 PM Subject: Re: [OKGEN ] HELLOOOOO THE LIST > Glad you got to have a visit with them. Good morning.....hope all the mom's had a great mother's day. I have a WW II question and am hoping some person on the list can direct me. My grandfather was the Fire Chief in 1945. at Ft. Sumner, New Mexico. The only reason I knew that was because of a photo of him in uniform wearing the Chief's badge. In reviewing some old photos yesterday I found one of his "fire jeep" with additional information. I'd like someone familiar with military terms and WW II to help me with the military jargon and also how I might find more information on him. With that said...here goes: the whole thing read as follows: (267th AAF BU) (20 Mar. 1945) (986) FIRE CHIEF JEEP. The date is easy to figure out and I think the AAF stands for Army Air Corp....now, how about the rest? (Does anyone know anything about Ft. Sumner or where I might find info.?) The second half of the question is would a "civilian" have been the fire chief of a military installation? (His uniform doesn't look military.....more like a regular Fire Chief's uniform.) And if that is the case would there be a " military file" on him as a civilian employee? and where might I gain a copy? Would the initials and numbers above be enough information to help me locate him in a file if it exists? I really don't think he was in the "military" side of WW II. He would have been 39 at that time. Was that too old to be drafted or to have volunteered into the military? and instead perhaps have a civilian job related to the military? Believe it or not answers to all these questions actually help me figure out how my dad ended up in the Air Force. Circular thinking maybe, but as everyone is long gone.....it helps to keep working at the puzzle. Thanks for any ideas........Sharyn
As horendous as the loss of property and the loss to wildlife may be, we must keep in mind that these forrest fires are necessary. As was found out in Yellowstone and the Tall Grass Presserve several years ago, fire is how these areas replenish themselves. Without fires the forrests and the prairie grasses will die. I would just like to think that "controled burn's " would be a little better planned so that they don't get out of "control". Thank you Sharon M. for keeping us informed about whats happening. Hi, a couple of things: 1) I'm NOT related to the Archer's in Pott. Co.; I'm researching the Bates there, but constantly run across the Archers. Then I have to stop and think, no I'm not looking for Archer's in this county! :-) 2) Avoca Twp. in Pottawatomie Co. was actually more connected to Konawa Twp. in Seminole Co. than to the rest of Pott. By connected, I mean the folks in Avoca shopped in Konawa, married the folks in Konawa, went to church there, etc. Asher, in Avoca Twp, was 11 miles from Konawa. I drover through Asher last October, there isn't much left there now, hard to even tell if it is still a town. 3) Actually, it is a good thing for us that Avoca Twp is so closely related to Konawa Twp, because Arthur Kennedy from Konawa is writing an excellent history of Konawa, including Avoca Twp. Vol. 1 is a compendium of all the census records of Konawa Twp and Avoca Twp. There is a good genealogy library in Konawa focusing on those two Twp. 4) I don't believe there was an Asher newspaper, could be wrong though. Asher news was included in the Konawa papers. Those papers are on microfiche at the Oklahoma State Historical Society in Oklahoma City, and at the Konawa genealogy library. I don't know if either one rents / sells the fiche. Also, most of the 1910's are missing [including my gg-gf obituary in 1914 :-( ] 5) I see lots of Collins living in Konawa in 1920. A Fanny Anderson (47) living with Estelle (23); and a S.T. Anderson (28) with Grace L. (16), all in Konawa in 1920. A fair number of Archer's also. In 1910 there is a large number of Archer's in Avoca Twp. Hi. I don't really have much..just that family says that my half guncle, Joe Willis LEWIS m Jewel ARCHER. My ggfather, John Willis LEWIS (father of Joe Willis Lewis) was living in Pott County when he died in 1937. I'm not sure when they moved there but I know he was one of the petitioners for the Presbyterian Church in Tecumseh in 1893. I don't know if there would be any connection or if it's any help or not but maybe...... pj
