I was kinda hoping it would get sent again, I didn't even get to see it the first time. Not sure why it didn't make it to my email box. Only Clemons I have met were in Marshall County, AL at a town named Arab. There is a small creek there named Clemons Branch. I sent a brief history of Shamrock to the list yesterday, but I'm not a nice lady. As a matter of fact, I'm not even a lady. I got the information from "Ghost Towns of Oklahoma" by John W Morris. According to my mapping program it's 40.6 miles from Downtown Sapulpa to Macawber. To the nice lady who gave a brief history of the town of Shamrock, OK. - I lost this, and would appreciate looking at it again and making a copy of it. Thank you. Allene
Anna, A great big thank you for looking. I didn't really expect anything. I believe, like some of the other folks from that time, that little Malcolm was buried without a stone, because my Mother probably did not have the money for a funeral, although I remember her telling us that a lovely song, 'Safe in the Arms of Jesus' was sung when he was buried. Buzz, Thanks for this interesting story about Drumwright. I hope you get an answer to your question. Allene
Gene, My husband and I checked the mileage from Micawber to Sapulpa, and - as the crow flies, it is about 30-35 miles, and give and take a bit, it would not be more than 50, 55 at the most from Micawber to Sapulpa.
Drumright was also a boom town in the 'teens. My dad arrived in Drumright on the first train into the town. It was in 1915, and he was about six years old. There are murals in the bank in Drumright showing the Cimarron River, north of Oilton, with drilling platforms so close together you could almost walk across the river without getting your feet wet. Does anyone out there know anything about an oilfield fire in which a tank burned and was extinguished by a man going up on the tank and smothering the fire with something. My brothers and I have an ongoing discussion about whether the fire was in a tank truck or an oilfield tank. My grandfather is the man who extinguished the flames. _BuzzOK@aol.com_ (mailto:BuzzOK@aol.com)
It was evidently close enough to go by team and wagon, because Sapulpa was where my Mother's Mom took her and her fiance in 1911, to be married. I have a copy of their marriage license from Sapulpa, and then I know Mama and her husband lived in Micawber after their marriage. Thanks anyway.
This is really interesting to hear the history of Shamrock!! I don't know the history of Micawber, but it would be interesting to find out.

Your message reminded me of Shamrock in Creek County. Did you know it is considered a ghost town because of its large population drop. In 1913 it was a sleepy hamlet of about 35 people. Then in 1914 oil was discovered nearby and the population exploded to over 10,000 people. After the oil boom subsided so did the population. It's back to being a sleepy little town again. My stepfather was born there in 1919. I'm sure his parents probably came there because of the oil field. That was the occupation him and at least 3 of his brothers followed. If you look on a map that shows all roads, you will see a huge network or roads northeast of Shamrock and southeast of Drumright. I think that's where the oilfields were.
Micawber is nowhere near Sapulpa. It's in Okfuskee County about 12-13 miles due south of Depew. It was named for a character created by Charles Dickens in the novel David Copperfield. I should have thought about all the questions I needed to ask. Is the Sapulpa Library online? Thanks again.
Oh, by the way, Micawber can be found on old maps. When my husband went to OK. in 1994, we only found a real old sign by the place where Micawber used to be. My husband was born there in 1930, in a cotton/oil field in a tent. It evidently was a VERY SMALL place. Thanks again. Will look forward to hearing from you, whether you find my info. or not.
The name is: Malcolm Henry Bruce, b. abt. 1912/13, or death abt. 1913/14. Thanks very much.
