Hey Lisa, GUESS WHAT??? Thanks a bunch, I hope you find something for me. I also am researching the Gilreath line! Jewel Margaret RENFRO(my aunt) married Arnold Onimus Gilreath 15 Jul 1935 in Shamrock. Do you belong to the Gilreath mailing list too? Arnold(Onnie) descends from James Granville Gilreath. I've seen the books there from the Dunaway Funeral Home (yes, dun-away...no pun intended!) which is now the Schumacher Funeral Home. They have really done a splendid job with it, and have a small but effective genealogy room with a microfilm reader, most all of the Bristow newspapers on microfilm, certain funeral home records, books about the history of Bristow, Creek County, and Oklahoma, and many other sources. If any of you on the list are in the area, I highly recommend stopping by. Yes, Donna, I am related to the GILREATHs you are researching in some way I'm sure. Descended from William GILREATH of North Carolina b. abt. 1730. My direct line stems from my great-grandfather, Thomas Sylvester GILREATH, who lived in Depew, OK at the time of his death. He is buried in the Depew Cemetery along with his wife, Cynthia. Their son Frank Harvy GILREATH is my grandfather. He married Theda Ethel SMITH of Bristow, daughter of Claude Marion SMITH and Nellie Edith RAMSEY. Their daughter, Joyce Michelle GILREATH is my mother. If anyone else on the list is researching any of these people, let me know! I will post dates and more info. soon. Thanks! ~Lisa L. Bowen, Bristow OK
Yes, the Bristow Library has obituaries from back then. I found my ggrandfather's from1932 and his wife from 1952. I didn't know where they were buried until I found the obit in the paper, and it told the cemetery. Then I went to the City Hall and got the cemetery records that showed the plots. Good luck. Good morning Lisa! I was wondering if the Bristow library would carry newspaper obits.from the 1940's? I am researching Alonzo Rufus Hicks and his wife, Eliza Hicks. His dob:12-17-1878 dod:5-11-1946. Her info.dob:11-20-1877 dod:9 of 1968.They both are buried at the Cemetery located by the park there in Bristow.I cannot seem to find anything on them, and I was hoping to find an obit on them in the hopes that maybe there would be some information in it that I can use..Their daughter Tina Holt was my grandmother, she passed away in 1995,and she wasn't able to remember much. Thank you for your help, Cheryl Santos
The new library in Bristow has put nearly all of the Bristow newspapers on microfilm. I will go down there Sunday or Monday and take a look and see what I can find around that date regarding Richard Rudolph RENFRO's death. Sincerely, Lisa L. Donna, A Brush-Arbor Meeting ? Well, The only ones I've heard of are, ( or were ) not many any more. Old Fashion Church Revival Out Doors..... Like under a Tent.... Only under an Arbor of Brush, or Wood......for shade. They used to be very common. Charlotte Slemp
The "brush arbor" meetings I am familiar with were for revival meetings. Church folks erected an arbor outdoors made of limbs and brush and held revival meetings. These meetings were usually held outdoors because the weather was too blamed hot to be inside. I think brush arbor meetings were held for other purposes, like family dinners, picnics, etc. Our Native Americans may have also used them for their gatherings, too. Wanda Wiggins-Havlick
A Brush Arbor was a shelter built to hold an old fashioned Camp Meeting Revival. They were used in the summer when it was too hot to hold the revival meeting inside the church. The congregation would build a brush arbor so they could be outside where it would be cooler. I am looking for more information on my grand uncle who died 29 Aug 1933, Bristow, OK. He was stabbed to death by his best friend Bud Watts, after they had been drinking during a 'brush arbor' meeting. He died 3 days later in the Cowart/Sissler(sp?) hospital in Slick, OK in the early 1930's. Bud went to prison for life, I'm told he was devastated and eventually committed suicide. Seems like there would have been some kind of news story about this? Just as an afterthought, I have never heard the term 'bruch arbor' meeting before, my aunt told me its something like a planting celebration or something similar. Can someone tell us more about what it is? Donna Ferris Penn Valley, CA http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/3303 http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/f/e/r/Donna-Ferris
I am trying to find more information on my grandfathers death, I have his death cert. but have been unable to find any obituary death notice or anything of the time he lived in OK. He died 15 Jan. 1939 in Drumright, he was buried on the 17th in Shamrock. When I checked the 1920 census I could not find any info on my Renfro line, I know they moved their in 1918 from the lead mines in MO, to the oilfields in OK. He died in 1939 so why cant I find anything? My mother wasn't born until 1928 but her sisters should have been in the census records too. Hannah Mildred and Jewel Margaret Renfro. The younger two Lois Imogene and Wanda Winifred were born in the mid to late 1920's. My grandma was Birdie Woolem Renfro. I have some records for my family in 1901 they were in book 1. they had to be approved by the Indian agent in Muskogee. maybe you would find records in Muskogee, Ok. annie in Sapulpa, Ok.
I am looking for land records of my husband's ggrandparents, Thomas Alexander Gower and Charlotta Clarkston Gower. They came to OT about 1896-98 and settled in Newby. I don't know exactly when they bought their farm land, but probably soon after arriving. Would the record be in Sapulpa? I have the property description, so will the county look it up and send me a copy? Thanks for any help. Jan in CA

I'm doing research on my great-grandfather Francis (Frank) Leighton HAWKMAN, born abt 1878, IN, md Luella Mae PATTON, 20 Sep 1896, Indian Territory, OK, had the following CH: Gladys Irene HAWKMAN, born in Creek County and live 4 months; Edith Frances HAWKMAN (my grandmother), born 21 May 1897, Mounds, Indian Terr.; Edna Rose HAWKMAN, born 5 Mar 1899, also in Mounds and Elsa HAWKMAN, born 27 Jun 1903, Oregon. Does anyone know the history of Mounds, how it was in the 1890's? I was told Frank was a city marshal during that time. He left for Oregon and stayed there until about 1907. Supposed to returned to Oklahoma, believed to be Creek County. He was killed sometime after he returned by some person or people that he arrested in the 1890's and sent to prison. Who would have information on this murder, if it actually took place? Does anyone have books about who were the town people of Mounds. What cemeteries are in Mounds or near by. What kind of newspapers did they have? Just an all around history. I have be trying for over 20 years to locate my great-grandfathers grave. No one knows in my family where it could be, except it should be in Oklahoma. Any help someone can give me wold be greatly appreciated. Thanking you kindly for anyones assistance on this matter. If anything is found on Frank HAWKMAN, please send it to me at: 3719 North Huson, Tacoma, WA 98407-4121. Sincerely, Justin L. Dingman
