    3. Hi, I need information on Oilton. Was/is there ever a Powerhouse in Oilton? I have a couple of pictures that were my grgrandmother's and it shows a building and says on back: Powerhouse in Oilton. One of the pictures has a man by the building named Mr. Bennett.( my grgrandfathers's boss? it says) My grgrandfather worked for the RR but somehow the Oilton buildings fit in. And Magnolia Petroleum Co. fits in somehow, too. Does anyone know if there may have been another Oilton around the beginning of the 1900's? Also, I'd like to post these photos. Who would I ask about posting photos? Thanks, Rebecca York<<northern Idaho>>>Searching for YORK/STEWART ;;;;;;;;;; *~Y~*

    3. My grandparents left St. Francois Co., MO in 1918 to Drumright for the same reasons. Grandpa, William Ernest Renfro died in Drumright in 1939, Grandma was Birdie Woolum Renfro, my aunt Hannah "Mildred" Renfro Foster is their only child still living. Musta been a booming place back then! 3. One of my grandfathers came in about 1915 from Kansas, to work in the oil fields at Drumright; and the other came about the same time from Texas to Oilton for the same reason. Who were your family members in Oilton -- maybe my Dad or Mom have heard of them. Believe me, Oilton still isn't a "booming" town -- but it's a nice little burg! I have a number of family members living there, and only live about 17 miles from there myself. I would enjoy seeing the ariel view that you mentioned in your post. FYI.... My family who came to Drumright was Titus/Albright, and those who came to Oilton were Peden/Lewis. 2. I guess I'm scooping Mapacampel by putting this site up ahead of her but I'm really interested in your family back ground. Many of my family came from Greely Kansas to Oilton back about the same time. My family name is Ghere. The were joined ib Oilton by the Tippins, VanDykes, and Ramsays. My mothers parents were Greer's and McDonalds. Here is the site. It also can see much of the US from a satellite view by using the search features. It's along address..... 2. Marti
    3. Hi everyone, sorry for the length, but got a lot to say. <grin> > Jacque wrote: > I believe it [1900] covers all people living in the Indian Territory during the > time the census was taken. All of 'em the census taker could find. <G> In 1900 the area now known as Oklahoma was recorded as two different census - 1 - Oklahoma Territory 2 - Indian Territory Basically you can see where the two areas were on this map - http://www.rootsweb.com/~okgenweb/maps/otitmap.gif then locate today's current county to see which territory your family lived in. > Since there is a census transcription project going on, I thought they might > include the Indian Territory Census, but don't know if they will. I have just received the "OK" to break the two 1900 Territory census into smaller sections (probably pages) in hopes of finding more volunteers to help transcribe/proofread this census. I checked into SK Publications offer of purchasing a census on CD with SK providing the census images to the Census Project to put online, BUT to steep for my budget. ie: 1900 Creek Nation was over $200.00!! The above page mentions SK has printed census, but SK has no Oklahoma printed census - everything in on microfilm. [NOTE: various parts of some of the census years have been transcribed by genealogical societies, etc., but not the entire 1900, 1910 or 1920 census.] Then I checked into Heritage Quest (by passing Census View because everything I've read/heard indicates the product quality is not very good). Heritage Quest is selling the 1900 Indian Territory Census images on CD for $19.95 *each* - Creek Nation - 2 CD's; Cherokee Nation - 4 CD's, Choctaw Nation - 3 CDs, etc. see http://www.heritagequest.com/cgi-bin/page.exe?catalog=CensusFilms&file=CensusHome.htm select "Indian Territory" <List this State> for a list of what is available. Check out the hardware requirements for using these CDs. If you decide to order, be sure to tell them you want the CENSUS IMAGE CD, not the microfilm (words of experience). <G> I did not master the online order form, but chose to call them - 1-800-760-2455 The good news - these CDs are as good as any census microfilm I've viewed. I am impressed with the quality. Quality is as good as the microfilm HQ had to work with to make the images. Naturally I haven't looked at all 600+ pages of the Creek Nation, but what I have viewed randomly is very good. If it wasn't readable on the microfilm, it probably isn't readable on the CD. The CD comes with print (not very readable) and enlarge capability as well as image enhancement. Are the CDs perfect? No! But neither is the census microfilm. Is there a Soundex? No! It's one page at a time labeled just as census microfilm w/ page numbers and Township, Range numbers, some towns, etc. Are lookups possible from these CDs? Probably not, unless you've already located your family on the soundex and know in what area (township/range) to find them and are interested in viewing more information and/or the neighbors for other family members. Is it perfect for transcribing for the OKGenWeb Census Transcription? YOU BETCHA YA!!! You can transcribe in your jammies in the comfort of your own home!! I've noticed lately many asking why Oklahoma census isn't online ... the reason is lack of volunteers to transcribe/proofread the information. Volunteers are the backbone of the entire project and without YOU we just can't get the information online as we'd like. Any volunteers to help get the 1900 Oklahoma/Indian Territory online? See following for more - http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/census/states/oklahoma/oklahoma.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/census/volunteer.htm about TRANSCRIBERS, PROOFREADERS, and Where to get Census Records to Transcribe Disclaimer - don't work for Heritage Quest, just satisfied user. 2. Marti, I'd be willing to give transcribing the census a shot. Bear in mind that I work full time and have a family, but I could dedicate several hours a week to doing so. Is this feasible? Let me know. Rory
