I am new to this mail list and hope someone will answer some questions: 1) The 1920 Federal Census has an area enumerated as #77, Wilson Township, seems to be on the far east side of the county. I do not find Wilson listed on the map. Anyone with knowledge of this community? Are there any school records available? 2) In the 1920 Federal Census there is a listing for Fred and Beulah and their children, Roscoe, (M)age 15, Audrey (M) age 12, Ruthie (?) (F) age 10, Ruby (F) age 8 and Denton (M) age 3 1/2..at the next residence is Albert Wilkinson and his wife Ollie. Is anyone familiar with any of this family? 3) In the Mt. Olivet cemetery there is a headstone for Fred (1878-1955) and Maud E. (1882-1950) Wilkinson, could these be the same or different people? The age for Fred on the census would fit this person, but has a different wife. 4) Are there any marriage records indexed by the Genealogy Society? That is a lot but I am just getting started and know very little about the area. Would appreciate any help. Sincerely, Barbara Wilkinson http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Forest/7705/barbara.htm

If someone was visiting family in Lamar Co., TX about 1887, what route would they have most likely taken to return to Hempstead and or Sevier Counties in AR? (It is unknown as to what time of year) In about 1887 Rebecca Denton Pettus was returning home to Arkansas after a visit and was thrown out of her wagon and killed during a stampede of wild horses. I am trying to trace her route in hopes of finding her grave. Kathleen Burnett

Posted on: Choctaw Co. Ok Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Choctaw/10468 Surname: SKEEN, HERRELL, FOLSOM ------------------------- Maybe the following will be of help to you. I located it in a book which was originally published in 1891. CICERO A. SKEEN ( CHICKASAW) The subject of this sketch was born in Randolph Co., N. C. in 1853, and was educated at Edinburgh Academy, N. C. which was under the charge of Prof. R. H. Skeen ( his uncle). In 1872 he left home and went west, landing in Atoka in 1873, and moving to Ponotoc County, where he taught school for some years. During this period he married Cleopatra, daughter of J. B. Herrell, who lived but a few months. In December, 1877, her married Emma, daughter of Col. Samson Folsom of the 1st Choctaw regiment, by whgom he had seven children, only three of whom survived. The oldest is named Walter, and the younger ones, Fannie and Cora. Professor Skeen taught at the Yellow Springs and Sandy Creek, after which he located a farm and ranch on the headwaters of Blue Creek. He has 600 head of cattle , 40 head of horses, and 150 acres under cultivation. In 1886 Mr. Skeen was elected representative on the Byrd ticket, and one year later went on to the upper house, which office he resigned when appointed to the lesseeship of the Wahpanucka Institute for five years, which appointment he is now filling with two years of unexpired term before him. Wahpanucka Institure, a picture of which is published in this volume, is the longest rock building in the Indian Territory and contains thirty six doors and eighty nine windows, three feet by five. It is three and one half stories high and one hundred and fifty feet long, with a capacity for one hundred and fifty pupils. This solid structure was built in 1851 by the Chickasaw government and placed in the hands of the missionary board for many years. During the war it was used as a barracks by the Confederate soldiers. The scenery in the vicinity of the academy is remarkably picturesque, situated as the building is - on a lofty and mountainous ridge overlooking the waters of the Chickasaw Delaware. At present the faculty has charge of sixty pupils, for which Mr. Skeen as contractor, is allowed ten thousand dollars per annum. This money, as well as that which is expended on the other National academies is derived from intrest accumulating on United States bonds, fifty thousand of which is paid semi annually into the Chickasaw Treasury. The faculty consists of Prof. Skeen, who has charge of the male department, Miss Cora Fuller, of the female literary department, and Miss Mary Turner, who is a most accomplished music teacher.
My4-Ggrandparents were Abraham Hanks and Sarah Harper (Shipley) Hanks. I believe Abraham to be part Cherokee and Sarah to have been Choctaw/Cherokee. Abraham came over into Ky. with William Caulk on his explorations and helped to establish Boonesborough in about 1775. I need to know mor4e about Sarah and her family. It is thought that her parents are George Harper and Elizabeth or perhaps Sarah Elizabeth Shipley. Surname searches I have conducted and family tradeition seem to suggest That Sarah is indeed American Indian. I need to know more about her parents, grandparents and siblings. Abraham was born in Va. about ca. 1745 and they both died about 1790. Abraham and Sarah had a son named Fielding who married Lydia Harper Who was known to be Choctaw. She was born in Fort Boonesborough. Her parents came to Ky. from Ms. and they were known to be Choctaw. Lydia also had a sister named Sibby, who married Fielding's brother George. Lydia and Sibby's parents were named John Harper and Mary Ann_____. What was their mother's maiden name? What other information is there about them? Who are their grandparents, siblings and other family members left behind in Ms.? Fielding and Lydia had a son named William Who married Louisa Hall, whom was also known to be Choctaw. Her father was William Hall, whom I believe is the same William Hall on the Anderson Rolls. What else is their to learn about William and Lydia Hall? What is William's wife's name? Who were Lydia's grandparents, siblings and other family members? What is there to learn about them? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Posted on: Choctaw Co. Ok Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Choctaw/10467 Surname: Spear, Spears ------------------------- I am looking for information on the Spear and Spears families of Choctaw County. My husband's grandmother and grandfather were first cousins who were able to marry due to the difference in the spellings of their last name. Samuel Love Spear(s) was my husband's great great grandfather who lived in Choctaw County near Hugo. He owned 40 acres of land that he passed to his son Samuel Love Spears, who in turn, sold it to a Mr. Stoval (sp). Samuel Love Jr.'s daughter Ethel Spears married Owen Spear, her first cousin. We are unsure how the original name is spelled because Samuel Jr's brother spelled it without the S on the end. Any help would be appreciated. Also Samuel Love Spear(s) family signed up with the government regarding their cherokee heritage, but Samuel would not because he did not want to acknowledge that part of his heritage. I have been told there are relatives living on the reservations, but I don't have the names.
