City Directory of Tahlequah, Ind. Ter. 1896 Containing the name and location of every mercantile establishment and office of any kind also name and location of dwelling, and occupation of all residents, citizens or non-citizens. The capital of the Cherokee Nation, a diamond of commerce and education in a pure and brilliant setting, a country second to none in a combination of the finest land and forests, prairies that reach from horizon to horizon, and water unparalleled. To quote a well known author, Tahlequah is "situated amid a quartet of wooded hills, from whose bases flow numerous health-giving springs of pure water, and is surrounded by some of the finest farming land in the world. Wood, water and grass are in abundance. Coal of the best quality is to be had for the digging, while lead, zinc and iron actually crop out at the grass roots. Physically, commercially, socially, or in educational advantages, this little city cannot be surpassed by another in the Indian Territory, or by few of its size in the South. It supports twenty-seven thriving mercantile houses, five weekly newspapers and one daily, three first class livery stables, six blacksmith shops, three barber shops, two bath houses, one billiard and pool hall, five schools beside th two seminaries, and five churches, all very prosperous, and the statistics show that there have been but two business failures within one year, and in spite of the fact that the town has been destroyed by fire three times within eighteen months the city is still the Athens of the Cherokee Nation. Justice is also well represented here, this being the home of four courts. The Cherokee supreme court, the Cherokee circuit court, the United States court and the United States Commissioner's court, and though many towns may boast of a larger number of professional men, none of its size have more prosperous professional men. In this little book we will strive to fill the long felt want for a complete directory of Tahlequah, and though others have been published, we wish this one to excel its predecessors at least in comprehensiveness. We are ambitious for our little book, we would that it prove a useful compendium of Tahlequah for Tahlequah. Tendering our sincere gratitude to the merchants and others who have helped to make this undertaking a success, we wish you, kind reader, twice as many more New Years as this book has pages, and bid you au revoir.
