Let's see... In 1893, this was still Indian Territory. There were legal residents who were nonindian if they were "needed," such as agriculturists, teachers, etc. And there were intermarrieds, which might be the case. These were nonindians who took an oath of loyalty and agreed to subject themselves to Cherokee law in exchange for remaining here because they had married a Cherokee. And there were intruders-- those who moved in and more or less lived without protection of the laws. As merchants and persons of class, my guess is that your family was here by permission. They used to have a process of certifying nonindian immigrants thru the Cherokee National Council, but I do not know of any place where these records remain intact. Hulbert was a pretty late-developing community. There is a 1901 Business Directory in the Muskogee County Library Grant Foreman Room, and you might find a reference in it. Did you try the 1910 Census?
