Posted on: Cherokee County, OK Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Cherokee/175 Surname: ------------------------- Hi! I have been corresponding with a great-granddaughter of Cade and Mary Sullivan Jones, just this week, through the Cherokee Co, OK Rootsweb List. She had a query out for info on them. My husband's great-grandmother, Leona Pearl Hubbard, was supposed to have been married to Cade Jones at one time, before his marriage to Mary. We don't know if they separated, divorced, or what. Cade, Mary, and their daughter, Sarah, are buried in Manus Cemetery, Welling, Cherokee County, OK: Kade Jones August 14, 1914 Mary Jones (no dates) Sarah Jones (no dates) They drowned at Horseshoe Bend on the Illinois River, which is not far from Welling. The Welling side is called Etta Bend. Contact me to get in touch with their great-granddaughter. Ann Marie

There is a Cade Jones buried in Manus Cemetery near Welling, Cherokee County, OK. This is not too far from the Wauhillau Community. He was the second husband of my husband's great-grandmother, Leona Pearl Hubbard Whitmire Jones Brock. They would have married in the very early 1900's. They did not have any children, as he died not long after their marriage. If I remember right, there is a Jones child buried next to him. There is no wife or any other Joneses buried there. If you believe this may be the person that you are looking for, let me know and I can find the name of the child and see if I have any more info (such as dates) on Cade Jones. Pam Is "Molly Field Cemetery" the same as "Fields Cemetery"? If so I sure would like to make contact with someone that is knowledgable about people that are buried there. While visiting the Muskgoee Public Library I found a book with a list of people that are buried in "Fields Cemetery". I have many relations that are listed, and as usual some questions. I am also interested in your 'Surname: Dickerson, Patton'. Would these Dickersons and Pattons be from Kentucky via Missouri? I am researching the Dougherty Family and there are many connections with the Dickersons and Pattons that moved from KY to MO in the 1850s. Happy Digging Ms. Cecil V. TIPS TO HELP YOU GET OVER THE BRICK WALL by Liz Lieber, Genealogy.com Every genealogist, at one time or another, has encountered a brick wall in his or her research. When you hit a brick wall it is a good thing to remember that every research challenge allows you the opportunity to grow as a family historian. Every time you get over a brick wall, you've learned a new research technique that you may be able to apply later. Here are some tips to help you along: o Check for Misspellings. It is always a good idea to remember that generations ago, name spellings weren't standardized and people often spelled their own names many different ways. Also, since lots of people couldn't write, they had other people write things down for them. This, too, resulted in multiple spellings. Even official documents (for example, a census, marriage record, or immigration document) may contain misspellings. In the end, remember to check many different spellings of a name you are having trouble finding record of. o Take a Break, Then Review What You Already Have. Sometimes putting your research away for a little while will help you see things in a new light when you come back to it. You'll often find new clues or hidden significance in your existing research when you take a step back and reevaluate your sources or reexamine any assumptions that you have made. o Look for the Person, Not the Name. Sometimes you'll hit a brick wall when you find two people with the same name living in the same area. In this case, only further research will help you determine which one is yours. One way to identify an individual is to expand your research to include his extended family. Why not look for record of your ancestor in documents relating to his siblings or his wife's family? Try to determine if friends or associates mentioned him in their wills or deeds. Perhaps he was active in his community and may be mentioned in a local history. By making your ancestors more than just a name, you not only spice up your family history but also make it easier to trace. o Make an Educated Guess. When absolutely no records exist, you can often make an educated guess to help further your research along. For example, to determine someone's age when there are no birth or census records available, you may wish to estimate based on that person's marriage date. Generally, in colonial times, girls were married for the first time between the ages of 17 and 21 and boys were married for the first time between the ages of 18 and 21. You'll want to do a little research to determine what the general rule was in your case but you can see how an understanding of some historical demographics can sometimes help you get past a brick wall. o Ask Your Fellow Researchers for Help. Genealogists are often willing to help each other out and you might be surprised by the amount of assistance you'll receive. Posting a query, for example at www.genforum.com, is a great way to get in contact with other researchers who may be researching the same family lines as you. * * * * * Written by Liz Lieber, Genealogy.com. City Directory of Tahlequah, Ind. Ter. 1896 Containing the name and location of every mercantile establishment and office of any kind also name and location of dwelling, and occupation of all residents, citizens or non-citizens. The capital of the Cherokee Nation, a diamond of commerce and education in a pure and brilliant setting, a country second to none in a combination of the finest land and forests, prairies that reach from horizon to horizon, and water unparalleled. To quote a well known author, Tahlequah is "situated amid a quartet of wooded hills, from whose bases flow numerous health-giving springs of pure water, and is surrounded by some of the finest farming land in the world. Wood, water and grass are in abundance. Coal of the best quality is to be had for the digging, while lead, zinc and iron actually crop out at the grass roots. Physically, commercially, socially, or in educational advantages, this little city cannot be surpassed by another in the Indian Territory, or by few of its size in the South. It supports twenty-seven thriving mercantile houses, five weekly newspapers and one daily, three first class livery stables, six blacksmith shops, three barber shops, two bath houses, one billiard and pool hall, five schools beside th two seminaries, and five churches, all very prosperous, and the statistics show that there have been but two business failures within one year, and in spite of the fact that the town has been destroyed by fire three times within eighteen months the city is still the Athens of the Cherokee Nation. Justice is also well represented here, this being the home of four courts. The Cherokee supreme court, the Cherokee circuit court, the United States court and the United States Commissioner's court, and though many towns may boast of a larger number of professional men, none of its size have more prosperous professional men. In this little book we will strive to fill the long felt want for a complete directory of Tahlequah, and though others have been published, we wish this one to excel its predecessors at least in comprehensiveness. We are ambitious for our little book, we would that it prove a useful compendium of Tahlequah for Tahlequah. Tendering our sincere gratitude to the merchants and others who have helped to make this undertaking a success, we wish you, kind reader, twice as many more New Years as this book has pages, and bid you au revoir. Hi! I am hoping somebody can help me with this family. The parents of both of the above individuals lived in Hulbert, Cherokee Co., Okla. and I believe that James and Laura married there. They may later have moved to Texas. LAURA GERTRUDE MAYFIELD, b. abt. 1926, daughter of William Henry Mayfield and Cora Chapman. JAMES CROSSNO, birhtdate unknown. Son of Archibold Patrick Crossno and Viola Catherine Wilson ? ANY INFORMATION on JAMES CROSSNO and/or his descendants would be VERY APPRECIATED! Thank you! Mary Crossnoe crossnoe@apex.net
