You may be referring to the actual cemetery where John Ross, President of Cherokee Nation when they moved from the East to Oklahoma, is buried along with his wife and other relatives. It is on the SE side of Tahlequah, just outside town, and near what I understand was a school. I was at the cemetery in July. It was hard to find, because it is out of sight from the road, just past the school on the left hand side, and the only sign identifying it is hanging on the entrance gate itself, so that when it is open you can't see the sign to know it's even there! The cemetery is also in pretty poor shape, but definitely worth the visit from an historical point of view, if this is the one you are referring to.
I was there about 20 years ago (as a teen) and we saw a bunch of teenagers vandalizing the tombstones. They stole one from near the official site of John Ross. We tried to get their license plate but they were too fast. Who would of thought that 20 years later I would wonder about the names on the stone? There is a James H. Hughes on the Dawes Roll but not the Miller Roll, #1643.
There is an area in Cherokee County that used to be known as Eureka. It is West of Tahlequah between HWY 51 and HWY 82. Could that be it?

I believe that I have a Jones family there. Leander Jones and his wife Quatie (Ross) Jones. There may be daughters who were hit by a train as teenagers too. Posted on: Cherokee County, OK Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Cherokee/199 Surname: Jones, Martin ------------------------- I am looking for any Jones that were in AR and then moved to Cherokee Co., OK. My maternal tree is full of Jones from this area. My grandmother was Molly Jones, daughter of Capt. Minor Jones, son of William Jones of KY. Would like to see your information on William Jones.
Posted on: Cherokee County, OK Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Cherokee/198 Surname: THOMAS, HARRINGTON, POPE, TOWLES, PETTY, HILL, MOORE, RILEY, HARMON, ROBB ------------------------- CHEROKEE CO. THOMAS I appreciate your lookup for me. Thank you so much. I do want to mention that I dont think they would be on the Miller Roll because as far as I know they were not Indian. I think they might have been there for the land rush on the Cherokee strip. Was that area included in the land rush? If not, maybe as an agent for BIA. My bloodline are Cherokee on my Mom's side and English/Welsh on my Dad's. These Thomas's came from a family of business oriented people. I see there is a Thomas Corner in Cherokee Co. Would you know the history on that or be able to refer me to someone who does? Thank you for your time and efforts on my behalf....Jackie THOMAS WOOD
Thanks, Terrill for work on the Ross Cemetery. I have kinfolks there (Minnie Etta Lassiter Kirk and Drewey Marion Kirk), but know their whereabouts... I think they have a combined headstone with possibly only intials, under a Peony Bush before you get to the big tree on the South end closest to the neighbor's house, and near the entry road. I will anxiously await your compilation, because it may help me answer why they chose to be buried there. Let me know if any part of the cemetery was moved from Bald Hill, because that would explain it. The place was hoppin' with bunnies last summer when I was last there.
Posted on: Cherokee County, OK Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Cherokee/197 Surname: Miller, Hunnicutt ------------------------- Blue Spring Cemetery is near what used to be called Gideon, which had a public rural elementary school which probably closed about 1963 and a store which closed about 1979. The closest community is Peggs, located on Hwy 82 near the Cherokee Mayes County line. Vian is near the Cherokee County line (in Sequoyah County) almost opposite corner of Cherokee County from Blue Spring. But there are 2 Mary A. Millers listed in the Cherokee Rolls. (No Hunnicutts or variations thereof that I could find). And the Miller Applications for these will have lots of info from which you can determine if this is your ancestor. There is, I believe, a post below telling how to get copies of these, and an article by me about this subject. One of the Mary A. Millers was Dawes Roll 6074 Miller 18996; The other was Dawes 2450, Miller 18976. One way to narrow it down would be to give me others in the same Miller family living at that time. These other names, if there also, will tell you it is worth the trouble. The Miller Apps are excellent, but the App number is not within my information, and you could ask the Indian Territory Genealogical & Historical Society volunteer to cross-reference from these numbers to the actual application, which contains more than the Roll. That website has instructions about what they need from you in order to answer a query. There may be Miller Apps online thru National Archives & Records Administration (NARA) using their NAIL database, alternatively. That info is searchable by name.
Posted on: Cherokee County, OK Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Cherokee/196 Surname: Thomas ------------------------- Cherokee County 1900 Census I do not have, but checked for your names in the Miller Rolls and don't find them there. These were 1898 and thereafter, though.
I finally have gotten to start the long process of transcribing the headstones from Ross Cemetery in Park Hill, OK. If you think you may have a family member buried in this cemetery, let me know and I will look. I was able to get a good portion of the cemetery done on Wednesday but with the heat, it made it very hard to stay out there long so hopefully an earlier start will let me get more done. In a genealogical review of her Campbell family I find that Etta Jane Campbell Trott's husband Samuel Trott was convicted of manslaughter in Cherokee County, OK. District Court in 1935-1936. I would like to learn the details of the crime and/or trial if any one can advise where it can be obtained. Thanks so much Donald W.
