JOHN S. AND LOUISA (HARRIS) MARTIN John S. Martin was born November 13, 1829, in Cooper County, Missouri, the son of Moses and Nancy E. (Burris) Martin, who migrated from Missouri County, Kentucky, to Missouri in 1819. About 1850, he married :Louisa Harris, who was born in Missouri, April 2, 1832. They were living in Gainesville, Cooke County, Texas in 1854, but in 1867, sold their land in Texas and returned to Cooper Co., MO. Here they remained until 1879, and then, again, moved back to Texas, this time to Henrietta, Clay Co., TX. A report in the Tipton Times, a newspaper of Tipton, Missouri, stated that three families, totaling eighteen persons, made up the traveling party, these being John S. Martin, Joseph S. Rowles and E.S.White, with their wives and children. The children of John S. and Louisa Martin were (1) Lucinda Albina Martin, b 1851 (married E.S. White and died in 1895); (2) Martha J. "Mattie" b 1853, married J.W. Denning and died in 1935; (3) Sarah E. "Betty", b 1855, married John "Joe" Rowles. According to family tradition, when the explosion occurred at the Ardmore railway station, she was thrown across a burning cookstove and was bedridden the rest of her life; (4) Nancy, b 1857, and apparently died before 1870; (6) Rhoda Alice "Allie" b 1861, married Robert L. Rowland; (7) James M b 1866, married Irene ___; (8) Dora Lee b 1869, married Frank Caldwell and lived at Trinidad, CO; (9) Infant, b 1871, buried in Missouri; (10) Infant, b 1873, buried in Missouri; (11)Cordelia A."Dollie" b 1872, married John R. Ralls, died in 1956 in Ralls, Crosbyton CO.,TX. Louisa Martin died in 1896 and John S. then married Eliza J. _____ . In 1900 they were living in Ardmore, Indian Territory, where his profession was listed as "Landlord," and he owned several city lots in Ardmore. In 1904, John S. developed stomach trouble and died on November 20, 1906, after having been bedfast for 111 days. The Daily Ardmoreite reported that his funeral services were held at the family residence under the auspices of the Masons, of which order he had been a member since 21 years of age.
