Posted on: Carter County, Ok Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Carter/1565 Surname: Hammond, Strow, Campbell, Smith, Slagle ------------------------- I am researching the murder of an Ardmore (in Carter Conty)farmer by the name of Hammond (or Hammons) who frequently raced horses in the 1890s. Mr. Hammond called for a young man by the name of (Martin) Luther Strow (15 years old, weighing 99 pounds) to race a horse for him. Mr. Hammond's horse lost the race and a confrontation resulted after a night of drinking and whipping the fifteen year old. Mr. Hammond wound up with bullet holes in his right temple. Luther Strow, his brother Jim Strow, and an Indian by the name of John Smith, and Mary Campbell (the mother of the Strow boys) took Mr. Hammond (in his wagon) back to his home in or near Ardmore. The Strow boys didn't know what to do so they went to see a neighbor of Mr. Hammonds to tell them of what happened. The neighbor told them, "all the Hammond delagation was a tuff bunch, and that if he was in thier place, he would skip out. Even if they came clear, chances is, they might bushwhack them anyway." The two Strow boys left, but their mother, Mary Campbell, was arrested by the Ardmore law, who had been notified by the brother-in-law of Mr. Hammond what had happened. The story goes on from there...but I would like to verify what happened, possibly in the newspaper or by a relative of Mr. Hammond. This short story was taken from my grandfather's (Charles H. Slagle) journal that he wrote when he was in his eighties. Can anyone help? Thanks,
