I am researching the Pruitt family as well! My Grandparents are buried in Pruitt Cemetery in Ardmore, alongside a dozen or so Pruitts (if Asa is not there, several of his siblings are!). My grandmother's brother married a Pruitt - they were an extremely colorful family!!! They did have a ranch outside of Ardmore, next to my grandfather's farm. The "head" of the family was "Aunt Birdie" to my daddy. She was the oldest sibling (if I remember correctly) and was quite an independent woman. Daddy remembers her only wearing overalls and a cowboy hat, chewing tobacco. She owned all the land and increased the family holdings considerably. There were several good-for-nothing heirs who squandered it after her death. Please don't be offended, Pruitt cousins!!! And please remember that this is the family folklore as it has been handed down to me! It's an oral history - so take it at that. I believe there is a Pruitt grand-daughter who has done some genealogical research on the family. Last time I was down south to the cemetery, her name and contact info had been placed on a sign on the fence, asking for contributions for the upkeep of the cemetery. Next time I'm down there I'll get her info for you. I'm also planning on digitally photographing the headstones, so if you would like I can send those as well. For all her hard work, after her death no one bought Aunt Birdie a headstone. She's got a cinder block. All my info is at the house, and I'll send you more when I get home in the wee hours! To fill in your holes now: Asa Judson Pruitt - born 19Feb1865 in Claiborne, LA the fifth of ten children born to: Thomas Pruitt and Orenta Eliza Sultana Hudson (that's a heck of a mouthfull, isn't it!!! LOL!) As you can see, your grandmother's sister's oldest daughter inherited the "SULTANA"! The Pruitts moved from Claiborne, Louisiana to the Chickasaw Indian Nation ("Way down yonder in the Indian Nation, my kinfolk lived on the reservation, in the Oklahoma hills where I was born!" Are you singing with me?!). My "kinfolk" - the White, Boston, Foster, and Taylor families - moved into the area at the same time (1890's - early 1900's) just in time for the big land grab! That's where the Pruitt's and White's (my granddaddy) got their land. After statehood the area became "Carter County". The Pruitt's did have a lot more Indian blood than my people, I'll have to check with daddy on that for you - I don't remember who it was or what tribe. I'll post more later! Love to talk to you! ~*~Julie~*~
