The following was posted by Alexandra Robbin <[email protected]> on Sun, 16 Jan 2000 on the Carter County GenConnect Query Forum: - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Surname: ZUMWALT I am trying to find information about a murder and hanging that reportedly happened in or near Ardmore in 1893. I've been searching the Web without success, and am now wondering whether anyone in Carter County might suggest how to track this down. In 1893, Nathan Zumwalt reportedly killed Johnson (or John) Lewis and was subsequently hanged in either Ardmore or Guthrie. His wife, Emily J Zumwalt, was apparently of the Choctaw tribe. She was listed in the 1900 census as a widow. I will greatly appreciate any help on this. - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Any replies should be sent to the Carter County GenConnect Query Forum [<http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Carter>] unless it is personal or involves live people addresses etc. when it should be sent to Alexandra Robbin <[email protected]>. --

I am looking for Joseph F. YORK b. abt. 1850 AL?. He at least 8 children, one named General Jackson and another Lee. I can't find him on any census. I know he most likely was the postmaster of York, I.T., OK when it existed from 1894 to 1914. Most or all of his children were born in AL. he and family migrated to south central OK after 1875 but before 1894. He may have been in northern TX at some point. I have found General b. 1875 AL on 1900, 1910 and 1920 census and Lee on 1920. Any information on any York's would be appreciated. Joseph and Martha STEWART had 8 children all born in northern TX. Joe & family migrated to northern TX from Tenn probably after 1872 but before 1877. Martha died in 1892 and is buried in Montague County, TX. Am looking for any info on them. Joseph remarried - don't know to who. He is probably buried in Montague Co., also. Martha Elizabeth's maiden name was WILSON. I visited Ardmore Tuesday of this week. I found the people at the Court House to be very rude and not helpful at all. BUT the people at the Historical Museum were WONDERFUL! I found lots of info there and then went to both Funeral homes and they too were wonderful and allowed me to search the records and made a copy of the record I did find. The main library was NOT HELPFUL. They didn't know much. The Chickasaw Library was VERY HELPFUL! They have the newspapers on micorfiche and helped me locate an obituary. I am going to go back to search the newspapers some more and will go to OK City if I can search the death records there. Ardmore is a fairly small place and with the map we were given at the Historical museum, we navigated easily all over the city. If anyone plans a trip there, visit the history museum FIRST. I forgot to mention in my earlier reply, the Harvey-Douglas & Craddock Funeral Homes took care of most of the early funerals. They are wonderful about looking up records or allowing you to go through the records. I was there in 1994 and had wonderful success at getting all kinds of records. I went to the museum, the funeral homes and the courthouse and came away with scads of information. Ardmore has a wonderful museum and genealogical society. There are numerous pictures of graduating classes in one section. They will do look ups for you as well. The vital records in OK. City will do searches for records as well. If you can go in, it's even better. Surname: Mitchell I too am interested if anyone knows where/how to get info on old records from the Confederate Soldier's Home. My gg grandmother Lucy Martin Mitchell died in 1934 in the Confederate Home, according to her death certificate, having lived there at least 14 years since she appears there in the 1920 census. I have not been able to obtain an Oklahoma death certificate for her husband William Grissom Mitchell, although I have been told he is buried in OK. I would like to know if the home had any info on William's soldier's records, as well as place of death, if the records could be found, as well as any additional info on Lucy. If anyone has any good leads on the records, please pass them along. Thanks Ron Beffa

Hello, I took a trip to Carter Co, OK to research yesterday. I did find some information on Robert E. Roberts born 1874 in Jackson Co, TN. He married Etta Atkinson 1902 in Ardmore. He had daughters: Catherine who married Fred Tate and Ruth who married a McGuinness. He had a son: Virgil Roberts who is also buried in Rosehill Cemetery, Ardmore. I found that Robert E. Roberts died in Ardmore 1956. I did get pictures of his grave and his obituary. The Colbert family seems to be related to the Roberts too. Are there any descendants of this family on the list? I would love to share information on this family. Robert E. Roberts was my great grand uncle.
