Posted on: Carter County, Ok Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Carter?read=1181 Surname: Rasberry ------------------------- Sue, for whatever reason, there is a photograph of a couple in the possession of a cousin of mine that was taken in Ardmore prior to statehood. The surname of the couple is "Rasberry." We do not know how Rasberry ties in with our family line of Willingham / kerbo. Surely, with a name like that, there can't be more than one family in Indian Territory with the same name. What do you know of the family? Jimmy.

I was very interested to see that Jack Glenn was making inquiries about his old friend Bruce Alexander. I remember them well, usually sitting together toward the back of the class of 45. Greetings to Jack and good luck in your quest to confirm the death of Bruce. I can't remember his family. We lived in the oil fields in Dillard about 3 1/2 miles northeast of Wilson. I think that you and Bruce lived in town or south of town. Does anyone know if the Wilson Historical Society has a web page? They are just getting organized and their building finished so it may be premature for such a thing. Hopefully, they will ultimately have one in order to promote out of town membership in the society. Kenneth Robertson OK City
I have been told that my Great Grandparents were married in Wilson, OK, Carter Co. Their names were James Columbus "Lum" Wells and Anna Elizabeth (Bettie) Miller. Steve Allen Miller was her Father. Her siblings were Lee and Leonard Miller, Mittie, Mollie, Clara, and John Miller. Lum was the son of Reuben Wells and Martha Catherine Wilhite. Lum's siblings were Sarah "Sallie" Wells Edmondson, Annabelle "Annie" Wells Danley, Glover W. Wells (who married Emma Gertrude Allen), Syrena Louella "Ellie" Wells Smith, and Lily Wells (died young). I have a copy of Lum's Marriage certificate to Maggie L. Hurst. They had one baby boy that I know of and his name was Houston Wells. He died when he was 4 years old from "croup". Maggie died one week later. I have heard of two other children, one named Mollie Ernie Wells who was born before 1905. We don't know what happened to her. Any information would be appreciated. One of my sources says that Lum and Bettie were married in Old Midland, Pontotoc Co., OK. Does anyone know where that is? Thanks! Dianne Coffey
Posted on: Carter County, Ok Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Carter?read=1174 Surname: ------------------------- Greg, Let me give you a little bit of what I have or know about the Alexander family. To start with, go to Alexander queries for Carter County on Usgenweb. There are 9 queries listed. The first is Nicholas, the second is yout BA and the third is about Bertha and Dempesy Alexander. This is your Alexender grandparents. Note in my response that I mentioned that Dempesy was buried at Newport. The inscription reads: DEMPESY LEE ALEXANDER BORN HENRY COUNTY, TENN DEC 5, 1875 DIED APRIL 10, 1935 WILSON, OKLAHOMA Bertha is buried in Section 101 of the Rose Hill Cemetery. The inscription reads: BERTHA BENNETT ALEXANDER JAN 29, 1886 PILOT POINT, TEXAS DEC 30, 1972 ARDMORE, OKLA. It may be significant that listed next after Bertha is a George Bennett. The inscription reads: GEORGE BENNETT 9-5-1853 11-22-1934 I am reluctant to tell people how to go about their business but based on near 30 years of genealogical experience I will make a few suggestions. Keep watching the query about Bertha/Dempsey where I responded for additional responses. See what you can do with the three death dates above as to obits from the Daily Ardmorite (must tell you sometime how I was once Mr Ardmoreite in Wilson). I cannot help but feel that Bruce probably passed away in either Nevada or California. Consider contacting them for a death certificate. Go visit your grandparents graves. It will help. Bye for now. Records show that he married a Bessie Stewart in Carter Co., Ok in 1903. He was the brother of Jessie Ann Osborne Blount of Maude and Durant. Jessie was married to Thomas Blassingame Blount who was a medical doctor in the area at that time. He last practiced in Durant. The Blounts had a daughter Mary who married Burnis Elmore and he was a partner in the Sweeney Drug Store in Durant. Nothing is know of Marshall Osborne except the marriage record and one letter written in 1906 that was postmarked IT, Oklahoma. If you have any information about this person or the extended family mentioned please contact: dbton@yahoo.com

Posted on: Carter County, Ok Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Carter?read=1171 Surname: ------------------------- Ref your query of 19 Aug '98 concerning Bruce Alexander. I was born and grew up in Wilson, Carter County, Oklahoma and the Alexanders were friend, neighbors and classmates. Bruce and I had 12 years of Wilson schools all the way from first grade in Sept '33 to WHS Class of '45. They moved to Ardmore sometime in the late 1940s or so. The last time that I saw him was in the early 1960s when he was passing thru and stopped to say hi. The last time that i heard about him was in the early 1980s when he wrote the Wilson schools asking if there was a former students association that he could contact. The letter was from a Las Vegas, Nevada address. As soon as I heard about this, I tried to make contact thru LV phone information. Got a number for a BA, called him, told him who I was and what I was trying to do. He said he was 31 years old, never been to Oklahoma and never heard of Wilson. Opps! Wrong BA. The Social Security Death Index has an entry for a Bruce Alexander with the following info: b. 04 Jan '28. d. 28 Sept'92, SS# 441-22-0103, SS# was issued in Oklahoma. Most SSDI entries list the zip code of the last benefit payment. This info was not included. If you have the zip, then you can go to the satate and get a death certificate. I called tje SS and tried to get the zip but they did not have it. Thats when i stopped. I can confirm that the birth date for the SSDI entry and for our BA are the same. I am almost certain that the SSDI entry and our BA are the same but I am not absolutely sure. Could always be another BA with the same birth date. You may be wondering as to my interest and involvement in this. Bruce was one of my two best and oldest friends. As one who has an interest in history, genealogy and research, especially in Carter County/Wilson/Ardmore, To know where he was or what happened to him was a challenge. And now, a couple of questions to you. Do you have anything to confirm his death? If it is not personal and/or confidential, what is your interest in BA? Hope this helps and I would like to hear from you. JACK

Posted on: Carter County, Ok Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Carter?read=1168 Surname: ------------------------- Ref your query of 10 Feb '99 concerning Bertha (Bennett) Alexander, the wife of Dempsy Alexander. I was born and grew up in Wilson, Carter County, Oklahoma. The Alexanders were friends, neighbors and classmates. Dempsy Alexander died in the Mid 1930's, as I recall. He is buried at Newport, which is north of Lone Grove. Don't recall when Bertha died but I think it must have been sometime in the 1960's. All Carter County cemetery inscriptions have been inventoried as of 1982 and published. I have acces to this data and can probably get the info for Bertha and Dempsy if wanted. JACK
Posted on: Carter County, Ok Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Carter?read=1167 Surname: ------------------------- I was born (1936) and raised in CARTER County, and the biggest Ardmore fire I can remember is when the cotton yard on South Washington St. burned. That could have been as far back as the mid-forties, but I think it was more likely the late 40's or early 50's.
