    3. Posted on: Carter County, Ok Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Carter/1570 Surname: GREGORY, PRATER, COURTNEY, SMITH, DENT ------------------------- I have some old family letters that talk about a Zack MOORE. The COURTNEY/PRATER family that these letters are from lived in several areas around here, Sorghum Flats, Davis, Hennepin, Fort Arbuckle, Courtney (Love Co) and probably some other areas. They reference the ROFF Ranch and I get the feeling that Zack MOORE may have worked on the ROFF Ranch back in the old days. In letters written 1915-1925, they ask and talk about him. I get the feeling that he was probably about the age of Emory Ann COURTNEY (b1859 OK IT, d1925 Davis OK). I made a brief contact with a person researching this line and apparently a Zack and Dora were siblings that were born in TX, their mother named Pearl, then moved to the Davis area. I haven't looked to hard for him on census around these parts but he should show up on the 1910 and 1920. That is all I know, but would like to know more, expecially this Zack seemed to be such a good friend of the family.

    3. Posted on: Carter County, Ok Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Carter/1565 Surname: Hammond, Strow, Campbell, Smith, Slagle ------------------------- I am researching the murder of an Ardmore (in Carter Conty)farmer by the name of Hammond (or Hammons) who frequently raced horses in the 1890s. Mr. Hammond called for a young man by the name of (Martin) Luther Strow (15 years old, weighing 99 pounds) to race a horse for him. Mr. Hammond's horse lost the race and a confrontation resulted after a night of drinking and whipping the fifteen year old. Mr. Hammond wound up with bullet holes in his right temple. Luther Strow, his brother Jim Strow, and an Indian by the name of John Smith, and Mary Campbell (the mother of the Strow boys) took Mr. Hammond (in his wagon) back to his home in or near Ardmore. The Strow boys didn't know what to do so they went to see a neighbor of Mr. Hammonds to tell them of what happened. The neighbor told them, "all the Hammond delagation was a tuff bunch, and that if he was in thier place, he would skip out. Even if they came clear, chances is, they might bushwhack them anyway." The two Strow boys left, but their mother, Mary Campbell, was arrested by the Ardmore law, who had been notified by the brother-in-law of Mr. Hammond what had happened. The story goes on from there...but I would like to verify what happened, possibly in the newspaper or by a relative of Mr. Hammond. This short story was taken from my grandfather's (Charles H. Slagle) journal that he wrote when he was in his eighties. Can anyone help? Thanks,

    3. Posted on: Carter County, Ok Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Carter/1559 Surname: Davis, Potes, McClure ------------------------- If Jewel May Paschall was living in Indian Territory in 1900 at the time of the federal census, she should be have been included and if so, she would have listed the birth place of her father and mother on the census. I have a distant relative named Ira Potes (b. 1891) who lived in what is now Murray County most of his life and he married Nora Paschall. Ira and Nora had one son whose name I don't know. It's possible that Nora and Jewel are related? The federal census for the Indian Territory is located after the states' census on microfilm. Her name would show on the soundex if she was included. The Morman Family History Centers are one source for access to the microfilm.
