Hello, I am seeking information about the Locust Grove one room school located in the SE 1/4 of 27-16-9 SW of Kingfisher in Kingfisher County, OK. I am interested in knowing how to obtain any information as years of operation, history, teachers, students, pictures, etc. My father attended this school in the early 1900's and I attended it 1943-45 when it closed. I believe that it was District 81 or 82. Thanks, Anna **************New MapQuest Local shows what's happening at your destination. Dining, Movies, Events, News & more. It's not true because Payne county was never part of any reservation or land controlled by any federally recognized Indian tribe. It went directly from being "Unassigned Lands" to Oklahoma Territory in 1889 after the land rush. Also there were no Indian Reservations after statehood. In any case, there should have been a birth certificate filed with the state. They started doing that in 1906. But she may have been born at home and there was not an attending doctor. Or it may have happened the way it did with my mother. She was born in 1934 and they couldn't find a birth certificate for her. The reason they couldn't was that she was born at home, (in a tent just outside Sterling to be exact). The doctor that came out from Lawton to attend to the birth did not get a name from her parents before he left. So he filed the birth certificate without her name. The state had to find it using her parents names. As to school census records, those were taken by the schools for school and department of education use. For a school in Cushing, they should be stored there. But if she went to a school outside Cushing that was under the County School superintendent, the going will be harder to find a record. When they did away with the post of County School Superintendent a lot of the old records were thrown away. Historical and genealogical societies rescured a lot of them. I don't do research in Payne county so I can't assist in your search. I only post data that is sent to me by researchers. Thanks for all the information. I know it is going to be hard to find that is why I was asking for help. I would not mind paying for the birth certificate if I knew I could get it. I just need to know where first If anyone else has any ideas for help I would really appropriate it. Some years back (late 1990s) OK dissolved the office of County School Superintendent. That office held the records of all the schools in the county that had been closed. Records in some counties were rescued by local genealogy or historical societies. But unfortunately in most cases they were thrown in the dumpster. Are early teachers' names found in any county offices? I'm looking for schools that my grandmother, mother and aunt taught in from about 1895-1938 in Grant County. My grandmother was Robertie Ford --her teaching career was over by 1901. My mother was Alice Baty and she taught from about 1927-1932. Some of her schools were District 69 Mount Vernon (southeast of Medford), District 53 Banner (east of Medford), then in Deer Creek. My aunt was Amy Baty and she taught from 1929-1938, possibly at Star (west of Deer Creek), Cherryvale (northwest of Medford) and Mount Vernon.
Yeh, I'm guessing it was in or near the city of Chandler. Back then even though it was the county seat of Lincoln county, it wasn't as big a place as it is now. I have a May 1903 photo of my paternal grandmother, Dona Holloway, with a 25-student school group in Hunton, I. T. I've been told that Hunton was near the southwest corner of Coal County. Can anyone tell me anything about Hunton, the school, or who some of the students might have been in 1903? (My grandmother was born in 1887, so would have been about 16 years old at the time.) The Holloways lived in Mill Creek in the time shortly before 1903, and Dona Holloway married Edward Cleveland "Cleve" Hyden in Center, I.T. in 1905. Any help, however slight, will be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance! Gene Hyden (in Colorado Springs until 9/1/07, then moving back to New Orleans)
I am wondering if anyone can help me. I have been searching for info on Jack LITTLE (born with the name Aransas W. LITTLE) around 1905. SAid to have been born in Oklahoma and by 1930 lived in White Deer, TX. Does anyone have school records for such a person? Hi Shelly, Lone Star school was in Latimer County. It was in operation from 1918 through 1954 and was school # 41Jt. I don't know what the Jt stands for and I don't know for sure what information we have on the school itself. I do know that we have some school records in our genealogy room. You can email the library at www.lcghs@eosc.edu You may also check on our web page at: www.rootsewb.com/~oklatime and www.rootsweb.com/~oklcghs Hope this helps you. Hi Carolyn, Good hearing from you. Yes mom know's Paden and she played on the B team basketball once she was a teen-ager, she says that the boys team usually went to finals and sometimes won, she says the girls would go to finals then loss out after a couple games. She loved it, getting off the farm and excelling at a sport was a life altering experience I'm sure. Marilyn, Our family and Jack's family lived in the Paden community just east of Meeker, beyond Prague. I graduated in 1957 and had memories of loosing most of our basketball games to Meeker due to their school size, perhaps, but we always liked the challenge. Dad bought duroc hogs from the Welborns (spelling may not be correct) who had a hog farm south of Meeker about the same distance that your Mom lived to the north. Jack and I travel through there periodically but do not know anyone to help you with research. I so hope someone can help as it would be such good news for your Mom to think over in her older years. best wishes, Carolyn ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marilyn Wilson" <passier49@yahoo.com> To: <OK-SCHOOLS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 05, 2005 11:22 AM Subject: [OK-SCHOOLS] Meeker school > Hi all, > My mother who will be 90 in a few weeks was raised in > Meeker and attended Meeker school for 12 years. Hi all, My mother who will be 90 in a few weeks was raised in Meeker and attended Meeker school for 12 years. She and most of her siblings graduated from Meeker school. Mom's family was the Hall's they lived a mile and a half north of Meeker on a 200 acre farm, most of them were born at the farm. They all walked that mile and a half to school for 12 years. Mom is Mabel A. Hall Wilson, her older sisters were, Irene, Evelyn, Edith, and Mary, they all graduated from Meeker school. When they went there wasn't indoor plumbing, the were two outhouses one for the girls and one for the boys. There wasn't a lunch room, you brought your own. Mom remembers a sad little boy always hungry, she would share her lunch with him. Some of mom's childhood friends were, Bonnie King, Norman Beity (her mother ran a hotel in Meeker), Maggie Tramell, and Leo Beeler (mother owned a shop with mostly hats). Mom's childhood teacher that she loved was Ms. McClathery. Mom graduated in 1933, she has pictures of that day but her diploma was lost in the Woodward tornado of 47, and I understand that there aren't re-issues of diplomas. Mom was the baby and is the only one left in her family. If anyone has relations or knows of any relations of these childhood friends mentioned, that attended Meeker at that time period, I would really like to be in touch with them. Mom remembers that the year after she graduated that they built a new modern school, she wished they would have done that a few years sooner. Thanks, Marilyn Wilson in WA state. __________________________________ Yahoo! Mail - PC Magazine Editors' Choice 2005 http://mail.yahoo.com
Sorry to tell you, but unless the genealogy society in Calera rescued them they were probably thrown out. Back in the 1990s in a cost saving measure, the job of county school superintendent was abolished. Part of their job was to maintain the records of the old schools. When they closed down the offices, the records were thrown out if no one rescued them. I know of one case where the genealogy society dug the records out of the dumpster.
