I am on the USGenWeb Bylaw Committee and what has happened in the past with some of the archives is that the coordinators have actually taken physical control of data submitted by many different individuals and and called the archives their own work. They have attempted to copyright other peoples work and even deleted all the information on the archive when they either quit or or replaced for their behavior. This is an effort to make sure that the fate of the archives are not at the whim of a single person and will not be in such a position as to "rip off" the contributors of all the data that was freely submitted. It is more to protect the submitters rights than anything else. Even if this passes, the contributor of any data can call for it's removal, from any archive, at any time and it will be done as requested. This is also happening on the county sites also, almost every CC that resigns takes the site with them and claims all information is theirs. The archives is in the fate of a single person, Linda Lewis, although I do not think she would ever "rip off" the archives. http://tess.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=doc&state=o7i3cg.3.33 Word Mark USGENWEB ARCHIVES Goods and Services IC 042. Linda is not in it by herself. I can only speak for myself, but I believe in the archives, the ground rules for it, the reasons for it. There are a lot of us that are committed to the USGenWeb Archives, and we will stick with it, no matter what happens with the USGenWeb Project. The search engines, especially Google, can find the data, with or without a link on the USGenWeb Project page. If the AB wants to delink the archives, that is the way it goes. Some people will cut off their nose to spite their face. Think about that while working on new rules/bylaws. David [email protected] David W.
