Mike Grissom tells me that Old Wetumka Cemetery is being destroyed by the land owner, to make pasture land. There is a William Robinson buried there who was Creek. He was Colonial and commanded an entire Creek regiment during the Civil War and was a very important man. Graves located near him are Benson and Barnetts. Mike says about 2/3 of the cemetery is already gone. Does anyone have any ideas about how to stop this and save the remainder of this cemetery and/or perhaps get info on what became of the tombstones this farmer removed. Shouldn't the Native American Graves Protection Act cover this? Does anyone know anything about this cemetery? Perhaps the destruction was done a few years back and has been stopped already? We would appreciate any help you can give us. You can reach Mike at [email protected] He seems to think the remainder of this cemetery is in immediate danger and is trying to contact the Muskogee Creek Nation to see what they can do, but so far, they are not returning his calls. I am having this same problem with a cemtery in Pittsburgh Co. It is known as an Indian Cemetery, the only record I have of people buried there is what I have submitted to Vivian.Of course this includes several of my realtives. I was told to go to the land owner and see if he would donate it or sell it to me. If he didn't want to do this I would have to take him to court to try and take possession of the land. That would mean I would have to pay for attorney and court costs. So you might try asking the land owner if he would do this, if not you probably would have to take him to court. Then either you or someone else like a church, would be the caretaker. I so far have had no luck with the landowner.
