I bought a book at the Tulsa Airport, called Oklahoma Place Names by George H. Shirk (a former mayor of OKC), it's his second book to correct and add to the first. The man that I sat next to on the plane made fun while I was reading it, I explained it to him and after my "speech" he shut up. <grin> It gives information on the post offices, how far from what town, and if not a tall tale, how it got it's name. Fer instance: WASHUNGA (Congratulations to Bill Cook, it's well deserved!) In eastern Kay County, 1 mile north of Kaw. A post office from November 15, 1902, to November 15, 1918. Until September 25, 1906, the official spelling of the post office was Washungo. A post office named Kaw Agency was located at the site from June 28, 1880, to October 15, 1892. Named for Chief Washunga, well-known Kaw leader. The word means bird. When I got home, my husband saw the book and made a face and asked, "How much was this?" I told him, after throwing up, lol, I showed him all the information in it, he then went and got an Oklahoma map and had me look up all the little towns he had been in as a kid. :) It was interesting and fun.
