No to logos, yes to links. Just got the message, hope it's not too late to reply. Vivian Sternenberg - Pittsburg Co. If this is too late then so be it. I vote no to the logo's on the Rootsweb pages that I edit, Carter, Cimarron, Custer, McCurtain and Woodward counties. Harold D. Firm Nay on logos. Beyond the issue of loyalty to the Project, there is an implied indorsement and affiliation when a logo is found on a USGenWeb site. However, I use a courtesy page where visitors can find links to alternate research programs outside the USGenWeb. I vote 'yes' on the logos on web sites. I find them to be helpful. Bobbye, Texas County

Yea or Nay? Logos, no! From the perspective of a first-time visitor: I'm still on dial-up, so I do NOT like to encounter a page cluttered with unnecessary graphics. Often, I find such pages have so little to offer in the way of actual information that I don't bother to go back. From the perspective of a long-time CC: Too many logos can actually drive away some of the visitors we want to attract [see above]. But they can also create unnecessary work for the CC. Right or wrong, the use of a logo still implies some level of affiliation -- and that perception DOES result in questions about the external site. In turn, those questions chew up time in correspondence that could better be used working on the site itself. Links, yes! I add any that I find useful myself, on the theory that some of my visitors will also find them useful. Since I've started labeling them as external links and putting them in a separate section or on a separate page, the extraneous corresponence has plummeted. I realize that this is more than you asked for, but I'm answering through the list in hopes that the additional information will be of help to some of our newer CCs. When I answered yes to the logos question, actually what I thought everyone meant was external links of some kind or another...although this is most probably a moot point by now...I'm sure they won't be allowed, very little is... - Linda Oklahoma

Is it possible & or appropriate for our county pages to have a search engine to search the archives such as I have on the Howard County AR archives Table of Content (TOC) page? http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ar/howard/howard.html The information on putting up the search engine I used on the Howard Co. page is from the Archives TOC Tips newsletter. Here is a link to the html page describing the various search engines. Search Forms [Note. RootsWeb mail lists do not permit HTML codes. I was playing around on a USGenweb site for Arkansas and down at the bottom of the main page there were links to other sites affiliated with other groups with information on that county. They were not huge links, just simple little links. I thought that was kind of nice. And, Yes, I did find a lot of really great information on the other sites that wasn't on the USGenwb affiliated site. It's the end result that matters, not who's sites are best or better. Ron, NO - if one wants a separate site then it should be separate. I do not think they should be blended together. If a person wants to put up a separate page of links to other sites or organizations then that would not be a problem as far as I can see. But the OKGenWeb and USGenWeb and affiliate groups should only be on the sites with their logos. YEA - Aren't we all in it for the genealogy part? To me it doesn't matter what project it is - it is a matter of getting the info available to those that are researching.
