You make a great case.... especially since I just spent half the day updating my to OK pages and still have to do my KS and Hoisington Family pages. Also, I saw a list of some of the new features that are being added. Sooo, maybe I'll come into the 20th century before the old wheel turns again! No, the automatic systems are not requirements. The only requirement pertaining to queries being that queries you receive be placed online in a timely manner - thirty days or less is timely. FWIW, I use all of these - CCHelper, Query Express and GenConnect - depending on the county. The beauty of using one of these systems is that your mailbox is not overflowing with queries - and with the GenConnect system anyone can leave a message online. I also respond to many directly for the same reason. When I have a few minutes to answer, all the queries for one county are right there - all on one page - PLUS the added benefit that the surnames are being indexed by Surname Helper. Marti

    3. Yes, Rootsweb's headquarters are near Frazier Park.. in the mountains between LA and Bakersfield.. We drove up that steep winding road in the rain last sping.. and the higher we got, the colder it got..(and we had the car, not the 4x4, and were starting to get a little nervous before we got to the Leverich's).. but we had a great visit with Brian (who is a native of ....OK!) and Karen. As Rootsweb grows, their NOCs are sprouting up all over..in NE, in TN, in Boston and in various places in southern CA (there's one in Redondo Beach too!) <grin> The NOC where the main server is currently located is in Bakersfield, although I understand that it is moving to a new home with a propane powered generator maybe as soon as next week! .. The information that I passed on last night was from the messages that Karen Issacson sent to the USGW Board.. Yes we had a big storm yesterday, it never dawned on me that they might have had a power outage, because when it got real bad, with the big rain storms we had last winter, Brian 4 wheeled out to the I-5 & went to LA to get a generator. 3. David has a good point -- many local genealogical societies do not phone numbers or offices or anyone who can handle e-mail queries. I don't think we should put private individual's PHONE numbers up on the Web. We also don't want to run the risk of offending local genealogical groups -- we want their cooperation, not their distrust. I fear that too many people using the internet are overwhelming genealogists and librarians with their personal research questions -- expecting instant answers instead of learning to do work themselves. The Genealogist's Address Book is the latest listing of genealogical societies nationwide, but the local library can usually provide that information. Myra

    3. Last message for the night - love seeing everyone talking, but I have to work tomorrow. ;) My opinion - all our pages should display the OKGenWeb logo - after all OKGenWeb and Twin Territories is part of 'Oklahoma Genealogy' and both are part of USGenWeb. > guess it would fall into the 'would be nice' category... Well said. > I'm trying to be more of a 'joiner' in the program, soooo, I want to > get things right! One of the main reasons for including -all- coordinators in the OK-IT-L mailing list - we seemed to have all pulled apart and no longer share thoughts/ ideas or pat each other on the back. Marti

    1. [OK-IT-L] Genealogical Socities

    3. > whether there is an active gensoc If we can't locate the info, we should enlist the help of those on mailing list - OKGenWeb, Texahoma, etc. Many on the mailing list are more than willing to help. Some of the counties just don't have genealogical societies. If you don't find an address, it would be a good plan to say so on the page and not leave the visitor wondering. Mike Taylor maintains a list of Genealogical Societies with online pages at http://www.rootsweb.com/~okpontot/ogs.htm and Gene Phillips has a list of societies at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/2596/genesocieties.html I'm sure both would appreciate our help updating their information. > contact for the Cotton County gensoc asked that her e-mail address be > removed from the page as she was receiving more questions than she > could answer in a timely mannner. Think we all understand her feeling. Online pages and email addy aren't necessary, but we should at least have the mailing address available to the visitor. > I just heard from the treasurer of the Johnston County gensoc who said > that her phone number is NOT available. LeFlore Co. Gen Soc is the same way - she doesn't even publish a phone number in the newsletter nor is there a listing in the phone book. If they don't publish a number for phone contact, neither should we. Marti
