Hi all, This conversation has raised a couple of questions in my mind. Are your, or whoever, suggesting that the information on our county pages also be stored in the archives? It just seems like a waste of space to double post. I realize that any conty coordinator can stop being a cc and pull down all the pages they have posted. I would be interested in knowing whether anyone knows if this has happened. I guess I just find it hard to believe that anyone who has been actively involved as a county coordinator would take down information if they decided they could no longer devote the time needed to maintain a county. <> I just realized that there could be other reasons for a cc to remove pages. Anyway, would be interested in knowing whether you think all the county info should also be posted in the archives. I believe that one reason cc's haven't done this in the past is that the "rules" for the archives said the information posted belonged to the archives and not the submitter. This particular "rule" was changed in the latest update to the by-laws, wasn't it? Or was it? Hi -- Well, how do we know who the ARCHIVIST is for our county? My memory is faulty -- I hate to admit -- but if archivists were picked [whatever], I have no memory of that. I'm more than delighted to have any of the information I have for my 3 counties put in the OK Archives, but I don't want to step on the toes/fingers of an archivist for these localities that I don't even know about. How do you we know? Myra ____ Myra Vanderpool Gormley, CG myra_gormley@prodigy.com Home on the Web: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~gormleym/index.htm
Thanks for the questions everyone - Let's see if I can answer this simply. We who are county co-ordinators - each of us can put what we like on our county web pages (well no links to sex sites) <g> but that doesn't mean the info is permanent. If you leave your page and someone else takes it over then they can, if they wished, delete your info and simply start over. I don't know that that has ever happened, but I'm using it as an example. usgenweb maintains an archive for each county and one for the state. With the permission of the person sending you info that info can go into the archives and then no matter what happens to your page the info will be there for anyone. Most CCs don't' even realize that there is an archive for their county info. It takes a bit of time to put stuff in the archives - we all work our fannies off writing html and then I, as the archive manager, will turn around and ask you to change it to plain .txt The reason for that is so that no matter what microsoft or anyone else does plain old txt should always be able to be read. There is so little in the OK Archives, mostly census and cemeteries that the usgenweb project group are doing with help from volunteers. But I visited several of your sites today and found a ton of info. I'd like to see all that info in the archives available to anyone who wants to search usgenweb. Now did I make matters better or worse? And no just because you are a CC doesn't mean you are automatically the archivist, although it really works well when they are one and the same person. Let me know if I can help you in any way or explain further. Thanks Linda -- I'll have to take a look at my pages and see if there's appropriate material. Possibly. Thank you for taking this job. Allbest, Myra ____ Myra Vanderpool Gormley, CG myra_gormley@prodigy.com Home on the Web: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~gormleym/index.htm
Hi everyone - Tonight [Sunday] we are going to attempt an OKGenWeb IRC chat at 8pm CST. Our first attempt using IRC - so everyone is invited for general chat and learning experience. How to join the OKGenWeb IRC Chat For those of you that have not yet downloaded the IRC software or have no idea what we are talking about, IRC provides the capability for you to connect to a chat session and exchange thoughts and ideas, etc. Download the mIRC software to your computer. You will find mIRC at - http://www.mirc.com/ or http://www.shareware.com/ Load the program to a directory (folder) on your computer. Then while connected to the Internet, activate the mIRC program. from the mIRC setup window click Add Enter the following info into each slot: Description: Rootsweb IRC server : irc.rootsweb.com Port(s) : 6667 Click Ok >From here click connect [top left corner - looks like a lighting bolt] to hook up to the IRC server. Once you are connected simply type /join #okgenweb and you will be connected to the chat location where everyone will be located. It is really pretty simple If you get disconnected during the chat, just log back on and rejoin. Look forward to seeing you there tonight. Marti -- Marti Graham, OKGenWeb State Coordinator
I would also like to know the differences. I have a lot of pages like the ones you mention but they are already OKGenWeb sites and linked from OKGenWeb page. Linda: Thanks for the explanation about being an Archivist. I just gave up Okfuskee County to take over Seminole County. I live here in Seminole County and felt that it would be easier for me to manage and post the information that I find here. While managing the Okfuskee County pages, I was transcribing cemetery and marriage information and posting it on the web pages. ALL information that is currently up on the Okfuskee Pages can be placed in the Archives. <GRIN> It's already all in plain text too, if a Microsoft word database qualifies as text, since I transcribe the material directly into my laptop. That way all I have to do is print it out, then I can read off the printout while putting it all in HTML format for the web pages. Rebecca Ramsey Rramsey113@aol.com

Hello everyone. I'm Linda Haas Davenport and I have accepted the job of being the archivists for the State of Oklahoma I'm in need of some help. I'm trying to put together a list of everyone who already is an archivist for any county in OK. If you hold the position of both CC and Archivist will you please let me know? Linda: I'm Becky and just picked up Seminole County. This probably sounds like a stupid question, but I'll ask it anyone. What is the definition of Archivist? I thought that the Archivist and CC were the same person? What type of material are you looking for? Marriage, birth/death records, etc.... or personal bio's? Becky Ramsey Rramsey113@aol.com
Anyone have an answer? Let me know. Terasa ---------- From: Tracy Tyson <tracy.tyson@deqmail.state.ok.us> To: pcuser@horizon.hit.net Subject: establishing a township Date: Tuesday, October 20, 1998 11:14 AM I don't know if you can help me but your site came up repeatedly on my web searches. I'm wondering what the requirements are for establishing a township. There is a guy in Rogers County who is claiming to have established his own town. I'm wanting to know how this is possible. His actions are affecting the lives of those who live near him and naturally these people want to know if he has the legal right to do these things without any kind of consideration or consent from them. If you can help or know someone who can help I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you. Tracy Tyson

Specifically, can *anyone* set up a rootsweb > list for a county, without prior communication with the CC for that > county? That's the reason I keep telling State Coordinators that they ought to recommend that their CCs request their lists *now*. If a CC doesn't ask for a list and a RootsWeb Sponsor does, RootsWeb will issue the list to the Sponsor. It's completely first-come, first-served. BTW, mailing lists are a pretty cool addition to a county page. Not only do they build a community around the county Website and keep people coming back, you can do other neat things with them. For example as was just discussed over on listowners@rootsweb.com, any CC can put a search engine for their mailing list archives right on their own county page. It's just a single line of HTML. PLEASE, PLEASE pass the word along to your county coordinators that county mailing lists at RootsWeb are free and easy to maintain.
