    2. Do we have a geek in the crowd? I have a link problem on an Arkansas page and I can't figure it out! http://www.rootsweb.com/~arwhite it's on the main page and it's below the slideshow, click on Join...., click go... won't let people to that page, it works for me! LOL I know the problem with / vs. \ but that does not appear to be the problem. HELP ME YOUR GEEKINESS :) May be a simple old browser problem but not sure.

    1. [OK-Coordinators] The Last Straw
    2. kma
    3. > To The Respective Person In Charge: Many years ago and three server sites, when the OK/ITGenWeb was starting up, I was solicited, because of my "Chickasaw Historical Web Site", my work with the Chickasaw Nation and my contacts there, to create and host the Chickasaw IT web site as a part of the OK/ITGenWeb. Which I gladly did. At a later time when a person volunteered to check the sites for broken links, that I welcomed. But, then the rules started changing, this was required, and that, and so on and so on. Now we have "de-volved" to petty requirements of "Page Updated dates" and e-mail addresses on each and every page from photo-captions to old queries that never will be updated. On my principal site the "Chickasaw Historical" page I use a system on the main page of a sort of Table of Contents and with each new entry I flag it as "new" with a date. When still more items are added later, I remove the "new" tag. But that site belongs to me, and me alone. It seems here lately that my mail box is filled daily with debates, gripes, complaints, etc., from the OK-IT mail list. And I frankly am tired of it. It seems to me that we have lost site of the orginal concept of gathering a group of people on the web to help others with their family history. If we must all look just a like then make a fill in the blank page for all the counties. You have never ever heard much from me as my idea was to just do my part to help others who might stumble across my web sites. Nor, will you hear more from me again on this list as I now tender my resignation. You may assign the Chickasaw IT web site to someone else and remove me from this mail list. Please feel free to continue the page as is until you find another host. However, the new host will have to remove the Chickasaw Seal, as I had to obtain a special resolution from the Chickasaw Nation to use it. Respectfully Submitted, Kerry -- Kerry M. 3. Kerry, I sure am sorry to see you go. This is the sort of thing I'm afraid is going to happen more and more. I know with me, if it becomes a grind or hassle, I'll give it up. I am doing cc'ing for a few reasons: 1) I have two of the counties my families were in - I wouldn't take on any they weren't in 2) I enjoy doing website work - still learning but love it 3) I think the next best thing to finding info on my own ancestors or to finding a new cousin, is helping someone else find something. 4) I support wholeheartedly - FREE genealogical information. Just curious, but why can't there be a date stamp only on the first/index page? And maybe other pages that we would consider almost as important as the index page? Another thing - whenever I add anything to either of my county sites, I send out an announcement with the info and the url to the coinciding county email list. For those that have county sites to maintain and have just let them go stagnant - This is probably why all these new rules and requirements! So this project doesn't just sit there dead. So to those that do this - get out before you completely ruin it for the rest of us. I'm not sure where all these rules come from, but whoever makes them up should reconsider them before more just give their sites up. That would be such a bummer. ----- Original Message ----- From: "kma" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, April 10, 2002 9:34 AM Subject: [OK-Coordinators] The Last Straw > > > > To The Respective Person In Charge: > > Many years ago and three server sites, when the OK/ITGenWeb was starting up, I was > solicited, because of my "Chickasaw Historical Web Site", my work with the > Chickasaw Nation and my contacts there, to create and host the Chickasaw IT web > site as a part of the OK/ITGenWeb. 3. Ethel, Don't worry about it!!!! Like swallowing a marble. This too will pass! Nobody can comply with "everything" that is demanded of them. You just do the best you can. You can only spread your time in so many directions. Most of us have families and jobs and church and clubs that we have to answer to. I have a dreadful disease in my family that I have to deal with. This takes so much time I have little time for anything else. My time on the website is the only relief that I have from the inevitable. I don't take any of the "demands" personally since I could not adhere to them anyway since I have so little time. I don't know how old you are or how many years you have been on the computer. You have nothing to fear by asking how to do something on the internet. Ask these people how to do something. They have all blown it at one time or another, including me. Nobody will think the less of you. I sure don't know everything about the internet. And remember, Sharon and Marti want to have a really great site at the OKGenWeb. I have no problem with that. But, Ethel, remember, you cannot idiot-proof the world. And it sure won't happen here or anywhere. Dennis Muncrief Host - Murray County, OK

    3. Ron, I had that one also and told them the town didn't exist when the map was made. They don't bother to validate anything. Just fire from the lip. BUT, here is the strangest one I have had yet. I have registered 48 cemeteries personally. I have done 38 cemeteries in Murray County alone. I am not related to a singe one of these people, so I just write the names and info down. After 38 cemeteries and 30,000 names I get rum-dum. But not as rum-dum as this person. She sent me an email telling me that I had her entire family in one cemetery totally screwed up. The first names were right but the middle names were wrong - the first names were wrong but the middle names were right. And to add insult to injury I had misspelled the family name. It was MOGG and not MOSS. I apologized to her for my slovenly work and told her I would correct it ASAP. About 2 minutes later I get an email from another person telling me that the names WERE correct and that the names are MOSS, and that it was his grandparents, don't change anything. The person sent an email back and said "sorry". If she didn't know who her own family was, how in the devil was I supposed to know? After that episode, I don't change nuthin' until I get a second conformation. Seems that many are fast on the trigger but slow on the draw.
