I had a chance today to try out the new 1930 Census for Oklahoma at the Historical Libray. It's fun and for the most part printed clear and dark, making great copies. Advice on using the census. ONE: It's not INDEXED> Knowing the county helps. But even more than that if you know the Township it's a flash. I found family in Washita and Blaine county with no problems. But then I came to Okalhoma City. Five and a half rolls, by ED Wards, which are indexed by streets bound on the N S E W by such and such street etc. You will really need to know where the person your researching lived. I'm trying to draw out a map of Oklahoma City with the listings by Ward number. It will be a week or so before I get it done and back to the library. In the mean time, the Oklahoma 1930 Census is available at the Historical Library. Have fun. Fred Frederick M. Are you referring to RAOK or RAOGK....?
Does anyone know who heads up RAOK = Random Acts of Kindness? They have cgi capabilities and I have questions, lol. I am trying to do a form so I don't have to use bravenet, etc. Thanks!
Folks, The voting form at http://www.rootsweb.com/~okgenweb/nominate.html has been reworked. Several visitors at Sat night chat used a test page with success and the form appears to be functioning as it should. The new form will send an email to the submitter, a copy to Becky, and third copy to another volunteer. Please encourage your mail list subscribers and visitors to use the form this month. I don't believe I left anyone out of the selection list, but it would be helpful if each of your would check the form to assure your site is listed. Thanks, Marti
Hi Wendy, So glad you enjoyed them. The Salve Interviews are something else. I set here and transcribe, and many times just cry as I transcribe them. Some are so very sad with the manor in which they were treated. I have noticed that those that were slaves of the Indians were treated much better then those of the whites. Guess that's why they call them the Civilized Tribes. [Permission to forward where appropriate is granted. ] Subject: Slave Narrative Collection (WPA) Thanks to the tireless efforts of Charmaine Keith, I am pleased to announce another statewide resource for the Oklahoma researcher - Slave Narratives from the Federal Writers' Project, 1936-1938. The Slave Narrative Collection that has been transcribed as they were written. The language and descriptive portions are as the interviewer transcribed them for the narrative collection; writing the language as spoken by the people they interviewed. We strongly recommend that you read the information from the Library of Congress explaining the language used in these interviews. This is a work in progress and will include interviews [approx 130] from both the Library of Congress and Oklahoma Historical Society. If you have one of these interviews currently not online, you are encouraged to submit the interview for inclusion in this online source. http://www.rootsweb.com/~okgenweb/collection/narrative/about.htm Marti OKGenWeb SC http://www.rootsweb.com/~okgenweb/

I am having this same problem with a cemtery in Pittsburgh Co. It is known as an Indian Cemetery, the only record I have of people buried there is what I have submitted to Vivian.Of course this includes several of my realtives. I was told to go to the land owner and see if he would donate it or sell it to me. If he didn't want to do this I would have to take him to court to try and take possession of the land. That would mean I would have to pay for attorney and court costs. So you might try asking the land owner if he would do this, if not you probably would have to take him to court. Then either you or someone else like a church, would be the caretaker. I so far have had no luck with the landowner. Brenda Choate <[email protected]> wrote: Mike Grissom tells me that Old Wetumka Cemetery is being destroyed by the land owner, to make pasture land. There is a William Robinson buried there who was Creek. He was Colonial and commanded an entire Creek regiment during the Civil War and was a very important man. Graves located near him are Benson and Barnetts. Mike says about 2/3 of the cemetery is already gone. Does anyone have any ideas about how to stop this and save the remainder of this cemetery and/or perhaps get info on what became of the tombstones this farmer removed. Shouldn't the Native American Graves Protection Act cover this? Does anyone know anything about this cemetery? Perhaps the destruction was done a few years back and has been stopped already? We would appreciate any help you can give us. You can reach Mike at [email protected] He seems to think the remainder of this cemetery is in immediate danger and is trying to contact the Muskogee Creek Nation to see what they can do, but so far, they are not returning his calls.
