    3. OK didn't really have county mental health centers until app. 1960s, when community-based treatment began. OK is now served by 5 (?) different private, non-profit corporations. There's been Eastern State Hospital--Vinita, Craig Co, Central State Griffin Memorial Hospital--Norman, Cleveland Co, and Western State Hospital--Ft. Supply, (Woodward Co?). The state was divided into roughly geographical 1/3s that determined where a person was sent. Others are right that Ft. Supply is now a correctional facility. I think Eastern State is pretty much now for violently mentally ill. Griffin also had a TB ward, as well as a veterans' home. Sulphur in Murray Co. also has a veterans' home. Checotah in McIntosh Co has or had an Oddfellows' home. I'm not sure about any other organization or religious homes in the state but they could be a possibility for someone. As mentioned, Taft in Muskogee Co was a juvenile home before becoming a correctional facility--same for Boley in Ofuskee Co. Whitaker in Pryor, Mayes Co, at Tecumpseh in Pottawatomie Co, and Helena in Alfalfa Co also had juvenile homes. Girls used to go to Tecumpseh/ boys to Helena. May have been other homes, too. For the mentally retarded, there's Northern OK Resource Center in Garfield Co (orig. Enid State School) and Southern Oklahoma Resource Center in Pauls Valley, Garvin Co. Don't know NORC's history, but before SORC was Pauls Valley State School--it was Pauls Valley Training School for White Boys (the actual name!) Black guys went to either Taft or Boley--I forget now which. Before that, it housed TB patients. Those buried at the institutions were often indigent or no one claimed the body. Residents may have been taken to local or larger town hospitals and then buried in that town. Or their families took the body back home for burial. This is probably more than anyone wants to know! :-) But I live in Pauls Valley, so can ask to check their cemetery if anyone needs--and am 30 minutes from Norman. Lisa Stark
