I'm not sure if we are talking about just Mental hospitals or the State hospitals for the mentally retarted. The Enid State School ( now know as NORCE is in Enid Garfield Co. OK and accepted children and adults from quite a few countys in OK.starting in the early part of the 1900's. There is a cemetery on the grounds that as far as I know has never been indexed.. The records are sealed. However in some funeral records several are listed and say charge to______ County.. Feeble minded inst. If anyone thinks it would be of intrest I will look up the names I can find and post to the list. There was a hospital (I think State) for the mentally ill at Vinita, OK at one time (may still be there) in eastern OK. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lois Burdick" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, February 20, 2001 8:49 PM Subject: [OK-CEM] mental hospitals of OK > I'm not sure if we are talking about just Mental hospitals or the State > hospitals for the mentally retarted. > > The Enid State School ( now know as NORCE is in Enid Garfield Co. the Oklahoma state mental hospital in Vinita, Oklahoma is still there and is still open, but they do not accept patients anymore. I have transported more than a few to that facility. I actually need to do some research there myself for a family member. One of those, sit down and write the letters things. State Hospitals is what they were officially called. They were mental hospitals ran by the state of Oklahoma. Since they were state hospitals they also took in charity patients. There is also a cemetery for the state hospital in Norman. It's now called Griffin Memorial Hospital, but was known in earlier times as Central State Hospital. The cemetery is unique in that the people are buried in chronological order. The oldest grave is in the southeast corner of the cemetery. The row runs north to the edge of the cemetery. Then they came back to the south end of the cemetery and started another row. Strangest thing I have seen in a cemetery. All the markers are identical in size also. The cemetery is known as Rock Creek Cemetery. It's on the corner of Rock Creek Rd and 12th Ave NE.
