I, along with others, have the experience that often times they dont look. I tried 4 times to get a death certif for someone; tried different names even, including nicknames........finally a very nice lady from OK city went there and lo and behold!! they had it. "Must have been some mistake on my part in the info". Baloney. I had made copies of each letter I sent and one of them had the right name and place/date where she died which was on the death certificate. Many years ago it wasnt like that......you asked for something; they looked; found it or didnt, but they did search. That is different.......they do keep your money, but if they at least look it doesnt hurt the pocket quite as much.
My grandfather recently passed away. I learned that the information I gave at the funeral home is what will used on the death certificate. When I got a copy of the death certificate, this was correct. Of course the information is only as good as what the informant fills out. So if you know the funeral home that handled the body and they kept records you might try them first, before Vital Records. When my grandfather died we requested a copy of the death certificate for every child and grandchild. The cost was $3 a copy in Arkansas. So maybe down the line somewhere, someone will not have to request a lookup from Vital Records. Remember also that sharing copies of your important family documents with others, may help you someday if you should ever loose the originals. One look at our State Health Department that controls the vital records should explain everything. Our Health Dept. has been involved in a scandal for the last several years involving "ghost" employees and some have even served jail time for it. This is all such a shame as it is so unnecessary. It places a really bad appearance on those of us in Oklahoma who are honest and hard-working. Unfortunately, this is just another example of politics and those of us who do genealogical research as a hobby (and those of us who do it for a living, like me) are going to suffer for it. ----- Original Message ----- From: <SMM1033@aol.com> To: <OK-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, June 20, 2002 1:47 PM Subject: Re: [OK-CEM] Death Certificates > I, along with others, have the experience that often times they dont look.
