Kathleen Burnett Thanks for all of the handy information. I immediately saved it on my computer, and also printed it out to have in my files in case my computer loses its mind. Kathleen Voshall p.s. My genealogical interest in Oklahoma is the family of my son-in-law. His grandparents and g-grandparents were in Kingfisher County in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The surnames: Bouton and Stringer
It seems Stringer is in my past somewhere. I'll look further into it, I only searched for a little bit tonight. I am particularyl interested in the Lovelady's in Arcadia, Pikes County, OK. Thanks for your interest. Dear List Members, If you are interested in knowing about other mailing list out there, one of the very best inventories of genealogical mailing lists is John FullerÂ’s Genealogy Resources on the Internet located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html If you ever need to unsubscribe from this list or any rootsweb list all you need to do is visit Password Central located at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Follow the instructions and you will received an e-mail of all lists you belong to and from it you can unsubscribe from the ones you want to. Always know that I will be more than happy to help you if you are having problems unsubscribing, you only need to ask. Please send this request to KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net not to the entire list. If you would like to visit the archived messages of this list or any other Rootsweb mailing list, go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and type in the name of the list you would like to search and from there you can search by dates. There are a few items I would like to suggest for the benefit of each of us. 1. When sending a posting to the list it would help if you would put the subject of your posting in the subject line. Doing this also might give you a better chance to attract the attention of someone who has the information you are looking for or the attention of someone who is searching for the information you are posting. Many members are on many many lists and when they see a subject line that reads "My Ancestors" they just delete it. 2. When posting a query regarding a surname it would help all of us if you would put your surname in CAPS. This way the members can easily pick out the surnames you are looking for. 3. Please remember to delete the tags and un-needed words when you re-send a message to the list with your answer. If you don't check this, your responses can become quite large and may cause problems with some of our member's servers. This member who might not be able to receive your message because of its size, just might be your long lost second cousin with all the answers you are looking for. 5. Remember to keep your Virus protection up to date and never open any attached file unless you are 100% sure what it is and even then you are taking a chance. 6. Now, the hardest thing is, when one of our own, a fellow member becomes upset about a posting from one of us. It is so hard not to jump in and add our two cents when they send their unhappiness to the entire list. I want you to know how much I appreciate it when you just let these posting go by and delete them. Know that I am behind the scenes taking care of the problem. If you ever have a concern that I might have missed a message that needs addressed you are welcome to contact me during the day at Kathleen.burnett@era.com or in the evenings at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net. Please remember, so that this list is better for each of us, the posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc., in other words Spam is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net I want to thank each of you for your continued support of me and your willingness to help make this list the success it is. It is your list and is here for your benefit. If you have suggestions or comments you would like in future reports, you only need to send them to me. Speaking of protecting cemetaries, about 4 years ago, there were public meetings held in Choctaw and Norman, Oklahoma, in favor or to protest the proposed NAFTA Corridor Outerloop. We got involved because it was going 1/2 mile from us, on Peebly Road. I mentioned the old cemetary on 15th and Peebly, and a speaker for the Sac and Fox nation from Nevada came on behalf of the Indians (and many do like to be called Indian and not the politically correct Native American). Several of the proposed routes would cut through archaeologically important and sacred Indian cemetaries on private land between here and Norman, around Lake Thunderbird. There were quite a few people from the Sac and Fox Tribe that came to the meetings. There was such a huge outcry of protests against the Loop, for various reasons, that they pretty much cancelled this area of the Loop. I believe now, it's in progress around Highway 9, going up the west side of the city, connecting back to I-40. Anyway as it's standing now, the cemetaries are safe. Linda Elston, Newalla OK
Hello All, There is also a need to support the legislation I have proposed to my state Rep. Danny Hilliard of Sulphur that will protect our pioneer cemeteries on private land. Currently in Oklahoma there is not a single law that protects these old cemeteries and it is possible for landowners to bulldoze old cemeteries and plant wheat or build barns on these old cemeteries. Contact your representative about this important legislation. Dear Fellow Genealogists, You are invited to a Heritage Day Rally at the Oklahoma State Capitol on Tuesday, March 11. Sponsored by the Oklahoma Historical Society and a coalition of Oklahoma historical, genealogical and lineage organizations to show appreciation for our history and support for the preservation of that history, the day will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the auditorium of the Wiley Post Building of the Oklahoma Historical Society at 2100 N. Lincoln, Oklahoma City. After receiving details about the legislation needed, the attendees will proceed to the Capitol to speak with their legislators about the importance of completing the funding for the new Oklahoma History Center by authorizing the sale of the final $18 million in bonds needed to complete the project. Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the newly reopened Research Library and also to take a "hard hat" tour of the new History Center site. The OHS parking lot will be reserved for your convenience and shuttle vans will be available to move you around once you are parked. All three venues -- lobbying at the Capitol, the Library tour and the hard hat tour -- will be available beginning at 10:00 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m. We hope you can join us at the rally and encourage you to invite others who believe in the future of Oklahoma and who have an interest in her past. If you cannot be there, you can still support the effort by writing, calling or e-mailing your legislators to urge their support. For more information, please call the Oklahoma Historical Society at 405-521-2491. We hope to see you there. Sincerely, Oklahoma Genealogical Society Board of Directors P.O. If you have not visited the Oklahoma Survey and Virtual Cemetery website. (Oklahoma Cemeteries Mailing List Homepage) lately, you should take a moment and check out all of the cemetery data that has been added and is being added daily. http://www.rootsweb.com/~okcemete/okcem.htm This website is becoming one valuable research tools on the internet, for those looking for the missing graves of their ancestors of Oklahoma. As you enjoy the information take a moment and send a quiet thank you to the many many volunteers who have made this site possible for us. These volunteers spend their free surveying cemeteries, taking photos and placing the data online so we can have access to the information from our homes.. They do it only for the love of helping their fellow Oklahoma researchers, never ask for thanks or regeneration. I for one am in awe of this kind of dedication. Kathleen Burnett List Mom
As Chairman of the White Rose Cemetery Board, I would like to announce that the City of Bartlesville White Rose Cemetery Staff and the board are working to bring the White Rose burial information online. We hope to have this accomplished in the next several weeks. I will advise this mailing list when it is accomplished. This is a huge undertaking and has been in the preparation and planning stages for many months. Most of the hard work has been done by the Cemetery Relations Coordinator and due recognition will be forthcoming. This monumental task does not take away from the Oklahoma Cemeteries Mailing List Homepage, but will give researchers another avenue of finding their ancestors who are buried in this historical cemetery and mausoleum. Could this sort of non-genealogy thing be kept off the list? Thank you. Pat
Did you know that We CAN buy gasoline that's not from Middle East! Gas rationing in the 80's worked even though we grumbled about it. It might even be good for us. The Saudis are boycotting American goods. We should return the favor. An interesting thought is to boycott their GAS. Every time you fill up the car, you can avoid putting more money into the coffers of Saudi Arabia. Just buy from gas companies that don't import their oil from the Saudis. Nothing is more frustrating than the feeling that every time I fill up the tank, I am sending my money to people who are trying to kill me, my family, and my friends. I thought it might be interesting for you to know which oil companies are the best to buy gas from and which major companies import. Middle Eastern oil (for the period 9/1/00 - 8/31/01): Shell............................205,742,000 barrels Chevron/Texaco.........144,332,000 barrels Exxon /Mobil................130,082,000 barrels Marathon/Speedway...117,740,000 barrels Amoco.........................62,231,000 barrels If you do the math at $30/barrel, these imports amount to over $18 BILLION dollars! Here are some large companies that do not import Middle Eastern oil: Citgo...................0 barrels Sunoco............. ..0 barrels Conoco...............0 barrels Sinclair............... 0 barrels BP/Phillips.......... 0 barrels Hess....................0 barrels All of this information is available from the Department of Energy and each is required to state where they get their oil and how much they are importing. They report on a monthly basis. Keep this list in your car; share it with friends. Stop paying for terrorism............. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of gas buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't wimp out at this point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!! I'm sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!! Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. How much would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people within one day all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next eight days!
