    1. Re: [OK-CEM] Funeral Home Records
    2. Raymonda, I haven't run into any trouble in any of the funeral homes I've visited in both Tulsa and Creek counties. In fact, the Creek County (Sapulpa) library actually has many of them on file. I honestly don't think there is any "law." Sounds to me like the funeral home you visited just didn't want to be bothered. 3. I have in the past and am currently transcribing funeral home records from two old funeral homes in Oklahoma City. The funeral home who maintains these old records allowed me to take the records from their office to transcribe them. There was no question as to legality with my request. Perhaps a quick call to the Oklahoma Embalmer and Funeral Director Board in Oklahoma City would clear this issue up. Their phone number is (405) 522-1790. Their address is 4545 N. Lincoln Blvd., Oklahoma City, OK 73105. 3. I know that here in Tennessee the funeral homes let us go into the records and do our research. Most of them do it with no problem and offer to help. Others do it grudgingly (the big corporation ones). But we can go see them. 3. The only problem I have encountered is that one funeral home in CA would not give out the social security number, but provided all other information. The ones in Woodward make copies for me on any info I request. In 1984 the LDS church microfilmed all but one of the funeral homes records. One director refused to allow his records to be filmed. At this point, no one knows where those records are at, last reported to possibly have been stored in the sons garage after the death of the funeral director. One funeral home in Ellis Co has loaned his books to the President of the Ellis Co Historical Society to transcribe & will eventually be online on the Ellis Co. Web site. So doesn't seem to me like there are concerns from these folks regarding law suits. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Web Hosting - establish your business online

Kathleen Burnett List Mom Kathleen, Can you tell me if a funeral home can refuse you access to your grandparents records? I was told it is private information and they could get sued if they gave it out. Is there any law against a grandchild getting the information? These records are 75-100 years old. I asked if I could at least see the index and was told NO. The only way I could get info on death and burial on these folks. The vital records can not find the right ones. I don't want to name the funeral home but it is located in Pawnee County, OK Thanks, Raymonda Allen
