Tribute to our Ancestors on this day of Thanksgiving. THEY did not choose us, nor we them; we never knew them, nor they us; yet we are inextricably bound together for all eternity and there is no law in the universe, no metamorphosis physical or spiritual, that can ever alter this inalienable truth. OFTEN we may wish for different ones and feel moved to deny the ones we have, but this is as futile as it is foolish to invent spurious ones, for our deception will surely be unmasked, if not by others, ultimately by our own conscience. WE owe everything, our very existence, to our ancestors, and yet we know next to nothing of them because mostly their lives were so humbly recorded. It is good that we seek to expand our knowledge of their lives so that we may better understand our own. THEY made us, body and soul, and we must accept without complaint or rancour what they were and what we are, for nothing and no-one can ever change this fact and it is barren folly to dwell obsessively upon it. WE recognize that the legacy of genetic inheritance is a double-edged sword. We should be grateful for those gifts of personality and disposition our ancestors bestowed upon us which we find beneficial and not rail against those traits we find less appealing, for it is surely in our own hands to change them. WE should take pride in our ancestors and their achievements wherever possible, whether high-born or low, rich or poor, prince or pauper, and not seek arbitrarily to revile or condemn them for acts of which we know nothing of the causes. WE must learn from them, from their mistakes as well as their successes; from their tragedies as well as their triumphs; from their sins as well as their virtues; from their hopes as well as their fears. POSTERITY and history are irrevocably interwined in the present. No coherent vision of the future can exist without an affinity for the past and cognizance of the lives of our forebears. REMEMBER that we, too, are the ancestors of those yet unborn and we should seek to leave for them a heritage of which they can be as proud as we are of that which our forebears bequeathed to us. WE bless and thank our ancestors for the legacy of the good things they gave us, forgive them their errors and pray that we will endeavor to use wisely the knowledge which they handed down to us. © Roy Stockdill 1997 My best wishes to each of you and yours on this Thanksgiving day. Greetings. I am doing lookups and headstone photography for Washington County Oklahoma. With the information I have available and am gathering, I would like to start keeping a data base of information on the cemetery information. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what software to use for this? If there is nothing already available, I will setup an Excel spreadsheet and keep the query information that way. I would like to set it up to be available on the internet also. I am also considering gathering information on the largest cemetery in our area, Memorial Park Cemetery located in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. I talked to the office person today and she told me it took them 5 years to enter some of the information on the computer, but after the cemetery was sold nothing has been entered on the computer since 1997. A sad thing. I don't have a lot of time, but want to contribute back to the many people that have helped me in my research. Your suggestions would be most welcome. I have some suggestions from some individuals already, but would like to solicit any other ideas that are out there. Best regards and good hunting. Hope someone can help. W T Higdon died in 1907 in Okmulgee, OK. I don't know the exact date. All records of that time were kept in Saplupa. I heard that the building had burnt down many years ago. Okmulgee Cemetery was not in use until 1915. I have no idea what cemeteries were in existence at that time in Okmulgee. Does anyone have a list of cemeteries and/or listing that his name shows up on. Hopeful. Bob Higdon
Dear List Members, Thank you for taking such good care of your list while I was gone. I checked in each evening and was needed only a couple of times. I appreciate all you do to help this list run as smoothly as it does. Kathleen Burnett List Mom

Hello, I am sending for a Great Aunt's Kansas 1978 death certificate. Will the death certificate include her mother's maiden name? Thanks! Margaret
I apologize to the lists that I sent my message to about the Ruby Cranor Book "Talking Tombstones". I failed to say this book is only about cemeteries in Washington County Oklahoma. A minor detail, but very important to the readers of this list. If anyone is interested in purchasing a copy, I will check with the store that I have heard carries it. It is around $30 or so. I purchased my copy from Ruby's daughter and she said it was the last one she had. I will find out the availability and cost and let the lists know. Best Regards Rich & Terri Moberly Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Washington County

Rich, Does the book contain McCurtain County? I'm looking for Ida Dempsey and Wilson Dempsey, Watson Cemetery (?). I believe that Ida died in 1923-4 and Wilson in 1928, both in Watson. Thanks! Dear List Members: I can't even begin to describe how very proud I am of each of you. Today was a day that we could have had major problems on our mailing lists due to improper postings, and wouldn't you know it, I was also out of town attending a meeting and could not keep an eye on the computer to stop problem postings if they happened. When I got home this evening, the first thing I did was to check my e-mail to make sure all of you were ok. I want you to know that I am the list mom 121 mailing lists and there was not one political message posted on any of them, but on some of the lists that I am just a member of, I saw complaints regarding political postings and out of control conversations. Again, I am touch at your support of me and your support of the manner I choose to run your lists. I bow my head in awe at you as a group. Thank you! Kathleen Burnett List Mom
A new page in Dewey Co OKGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~okdewey/rileycem.html shows in pictures the vandalism of historic James Riley cemetery, west of Taloga, 200 feet from road, NE/4 of Section 17-18N-17WIM, owned by Alene Squires (Mrs. Lonnie). Describes the life of James Riley in a brief biography, from 1859 to 1903, from Ireland to Oklahoma Territory, a clerk to an Indian trader in 1885, husband of a Cheyenne woman for 18 years, respectable rancher and active citizen of Dewey County, Oklahoma Territory. A small family cemetery, vandalized, fence removed, tombstones broken of James Riley, his wife Nina, 2 of their children George and Minney, and Nina's brother Willie Livingbear. This cemetery deserves respect. Someone on one of these 3 lists requested my help in looking up and photographing a couple of headstones in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Bartlesville and the McMain Cemetery in Nowata County. I am afraid I have lost that email and the names I am looking for. I had started some of the research and then was tied up with kids sports, work, and my wife's illness and think I may have filed the email where I can't find it easily. If you will send me another email off list, I will attempt to get the photographs this weekend. My apologies for taking so long and for losing the information.
